What is IRC ...anyway ..???

What Software Do I Need?: IRC Clients

To run IRC, you need an IRC program, commonly called a Client. There are lots of them out there, but the two most commonly used are IRCii and mIRC. IRCii is the original IRC client, and runs on either a Unix or Linux based system. It's the most powerful of all the IRC clients, and also the most complicated and difficult to learn. If you're not willing to learn the Unix prog ramming language which is not for the uninitiated, find another client. Most people prefer a simple userfriendly client. The best Windows based IRC client, bar none, is mIRC. It's easy to use, menu/icon driven, highly configurable, and it's freeware! Most of the people on IRC use it, and those that don't soon throw out what they are using and convert to it. mIRC is the preferred client on Loverslane.

How Do I Connect, and What Do I Connect To?

IRC is based on a client-server model. The client (your IRC program) connects to an IRC server. The IRC server transports your data (messages) to other clients which are also hooked to the server. It's actually much more complicated than that because m any IRC servers are connected together in the network, and all clients are not necessarily connected to the same server, but you don't need to know all that anyway. To start an IRC session you start up your IRC program and connect to an IRC server. The server you select depends on the Network you choose and your geographical location. It's always best to connect to a server that's geographically close to you to minimize lag time, but it's not absolutely necessary. Your IRC program will dictate how you actually perform the connection process. Read the Help section of your IRC program to get the details.

OK, I'm Connected.... What Do I Do Next?

Now that you're connected, you need to join a channel (chat room). The quickest way is to type /join #[name of a channel]. For example, if I wanted to join Loverslane , I would type /join #!loverslane. The channel names are case insensitive, so you don't have to worry about capitalization, but you do need to include the pound sign ( # ) which preceeds all channel names. Also, all IRC commands are preceeded by the forward slash ( / ). That's it! You're on the channel, and you can start chatting away!

IRC Etiquette...Mind Your Manners

You'll find all kinds of people on IRC. Some nice, and some not so nice. Simply behave as you would in the real world. Most people will be friendly and considerate, if you are as well. Most channels will have a topic set, so check it out before you dive in. When you join a channel, say hello. Don't expect to get hello's back from everyone, especially when there are lots of people on the channel. If you've never visited the channel before and have no idea what to expect, just sit back and watch for awhile to get a feel for the flow of the channel (thats called "lurking"). Most of all enjoy yourself ... have fun!

I like to set my Popups so I can recognize them easily .. in my channel menu .. this is how the above one is set up ..

... the /me command denotes whatever nickname you are at that time .. the $$1 denotes the nickname that you are highlighting on the right of the channel .. in the list of nicknames ..

This one is an example of one set up to play a .wav file at the same time as the HUG action .. remember any action is always started with an * at the beginning of that line .. and is colored in purple .. see how the /sound command replaces the /me command ..
Also .. a very important thing to remember is spacing .. if your Popup isnt working there is always a reason .. usually it's a spacing problem .. sometimes its a simple problem of forgetting one simple character .. like the : before the /me command ..
