Smaug and MUD Info

SMAUG = Simulated Medieval Adventure
multi-User Game
SMAUG is an ongoing project headed up by Derek Snider (Thoric),
who has taken on assistants to help expand and improve the code.
MUD = Multi User Dungeon
If you have not played on a mud for at least a year or two or three.... I recommend finding a mud code base you like and play it... learn all you can about it.... then ask the Imm's on it if you could learn to build for them. Learn the building commands and ALL you can about basic Imm commands. After you learn all you can and know what you are doing, then MAYBE start thinking of making your own mud. Don't just jump in with your eyes closed as this is alot of work, and is very time consumming. Running a mud also cost money if you rent server space, because servers are NOT free.... they are very expensive machines that require UPKEEP. Upkeep money has to come from somewhere...... If you want to learn to build and can not find a mud to build on, then get smaug 1.02a and set it up on your computer, or get ORB off-line building program and go to it. Either one can be used to learn building. Starting a mud when you don't know what you are doing is crazy because you don't have the knowledge to figure out what is wrong when a problem comes up, and you can't teach others to build for you if you don't know how to build yourself.
I am putting this up for anyone wishing to find out information about Smaug, or if someone needs info on getting Smaug up and running in Win95, or whatever. Smaug is a MUD that is written in C, but also has a version written in Visual C++. The old version of Smaug is 1.02a which has an exe and dll file already available so it can be run in Win95 without setting up and useing a compiler. The new version is Smaug 1.4 which does not have an exe or dll file available yet. So to run 1.4 you will have to get, buy, or download a compiler and figure out how to use it. The version in Visual C++ is called SmaugWiz Version 2.0a. Compilers that you can download for free (donations are gladly accepted) are Cygnus version b19, DJGPP, Linux, and various others if you look around.
Here are the sites where all of the above can be found and the exact file/files that
are needed:
WINZIP:
http://www.winzip.com/download.html
winzip95.exe
Use this to unarchive the files below that are not exe files, be sure to mark the box that says "Use Folder Names" so the folders are created.
MUD CLIENTS:
Programs that let you log onto muds to play, build, Imm, or whatever...
Windows telnet.exe found on your computer...not too fancy...plain black and white.
ZMUD in color with settings to allow you to pick your own preferences:
http://www.zuggsoft.com/zuggsoft/index.cfm
pick the one that fits your computer
There are other mud clients.....Tintin is one, but I have not tried it myself.
SMAUG:
ftp://ftp.game.org/pub/smaug/
for version 1.02a you need two files.....
smaug1.02a.tgz
this is the actual smaug file.
smaugw32 1.02a.zip
this is the file with the exe and dll needed to run smaug1.02a in win95 without compiling.
for version 1.4 there is only one file.....
smaug1.4.tgz
there is NOT an EXE file for 1.4 YET they are too busy working on the doc's for it.
SMAUGWIZARD:
ftp://game.org
and also at
ftp://cyberenet.net/home/russk2/SmaugWiz/
The file is SmaugW105.zip, and it contains two executable files. SmaugW105.exe installs the server, and SmaugSrcW105.exe installs the source project for Visual C++. It is for running on WinNT instead of *nix systems.
CYGNUS:
Go here and pick a download site:
http://www.cygnus.com/misc/gnu-win32/
at the download site get
cdk.exe
There are also files here to read to help you setup and run the compiler.
DJGPP:
Going here and picking the ZIP PICKER is the easy way:
http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/
the main file is djdev201.zip but you need other files for it to run right, and I recomend RHIDE to use with it as an editor. At this site choose the ZIP PICKER and tell it you what you want to be able to do and it will give you a list of files that you need to download and set up. There is also plenty of FAQS and DOCS here for anyone to read to find out more info on setup, running, and problem solveing with DJGPP.
LINUX:
You can go here and try to figure out Linux if you have lots of free time to spend:
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/
I use the previous two....hard drive too small for Linux.....I have heard everyone say redhat is good *shrug* I'll have to get a bigger hard drive to find out....
MIRC and IDENTD:
Running Smaug in Win95 is very very laggy. To get rid of the lag is very very easy. All you need to do is go here:
http://mirc.eon.net.au/get.html
and pick the right one for your computer. Download MIRC and set it up on your computer. When you start up MIRC the first time go into file, setup, identd.... then just make sure the Enable Indent server box is marked (at the top), and the bottom Enable only when connecting is NOT marked. You do NOT have to connect to a server to use this to speed up smaug, it just has to be running in the background like smaug. Smaug runs much faster with it, I even saw someone that said it ran TOO fast with it. (Complained of not being able to cast spells fast enough before each round was over in combat.)
OTHER SMAUG or MUD FAQS or SITES:
This site has Altrag's Smaug FAQ which tells how to get smaug running and how to add color to 1.02a plus other useful info:
http://tsr.mudsrus.com/htm/smaugfaq.htm
Here is a FAQ by Sadiq that will answer your questions about installing smaug and getting it to run in Win95 or on a server.... if you have one or have rented space on one, This means smaug 1.02a...NOT 1.4 because it is too new yet to have FAQ's:
http://members.aol.com/BSName/SMAUG/faq.txt
Here is a fairly new Smaug FAQ that was also written for 1.02a so it won't help you much with 1.4:
http://www.co.iup.edu/~hzcg/smaug/
Here is a good site to find a server that fits your needs if you want to find server space to rent to put your mud on:
http://drynia.betterbox.net/mu-hosting-faq.html
You can search the Smaug mailing list archives for info here:
http://www.game.org/smaug/maillist.html
Here is a site that has good reading and some areas that can be used, don't think they are smaug code base though, CAW = Curious Areas Workshop:
http://democracy.queensu.ca/~fletcher/VieMud/Caw/
The site for The Area Builders Forum with lots of info and links is here:
http://www.tidalwave.net/~rainman/abf/main.html
The site for ORB, a smaug OFF-line building program can be downloaded here, now has a new version, orb version 1015a, that supports smaug 1.4:
http://www.shadow-lands.com/orb.html
Here is Darkoth's Mud Store which has all kinds of mud info including snippets:
http://darkoth.mudsrus.com/
Here is Erwin's site with more snippets:
http://abandoned.org/drylock/snip.shtml
I will add more later, but this is enough to get anyone started in reading and learning about Smaug, muds, and all that goes with it.....but remember most stuff WILL be for 1.02a NOT for 1.4 as it is TOO new to have much info on websites yet.... people are still trying to get the errors and bugs worked out, so they don't have time to do 1.4 FAQ's and probably won't for awhile yet..... with the exception of Nivek (AKA Kevin London), the head coder of ROD where Smaug comes from, who is working his %$# off to get the smaug doc's done for putting in the 1.4 download of smaug.......
Added Aug. 20, 1999....there is now a newer version of smaug...
version 1.4a which can be found at the RoD smaug web site, I will try to get this page updated soon and turn the site locations into links...just really busy right now with an out of state move and getting the kids into thier new school.
Good Luck and Enjoy!!
