Joe is the voice of reason...or is that worry? Of all the members of the group, Joe is the most concerned out of all of them. Because of this you'll always hear him questioning and complaining about the group's actions. It is his nature to take the safest route. But don't get him wrong. Although he does do a lot of complaining, Joe is usually just thinking about the welfare of the group. Joe is rather thoughtful and he sees himself as being the one to keep them all safe.
Sometimes his complaining is due to his many "allergies" and "conditions" and "phobias." Joe seems to contract these things from just about anything. Be it the dark or cramped places, Joe will always voice some kind of comment. Joe is extremely pessimistic and nervous. Because of these traits he will usually disagree with Tai's plans and say something sarcastic. His nervousness is probably due to the fact that he thinks in a negative light too often. Not to mention he can be a scaredy cat at times. But being nervous hinders his ability to make big decisions.
Let's put this lightly. Gomamon and Joe are two utter and complete opposites. While Gomamon is lively and loves to goof off and have fun, Joe is serious and conservative and doesn't adapt well to the new situations he encounters in the Digi-World. Although these two are different, they complement each other as well. They are hilarious and cute together, and they trade common sense for a sense of humour. Sometimes they argue, especially over food, but you can tell they've grown one each other.
Joe can be brave when he really wants to or when the time calls for it. Sometimes, reluctantly, he will be the hero when he has to. In desperate times, Joe will always be there for you. (See ep. 7, 11, 23 for more info) When Joe's confidence is up, it's hard to stop him. Joe's definitely the scholar of the group. Not necessarily the brains, that's Izzy, but he is the study worm. His hobby is homework. When in the Digi-World he's worried about missing too much school. Talk about an eager student!
Although he probably majored in complaining and worrying, Joe is a friend who will make the sacrifices and put his part in when it really counts.
In "Prophecy," we learn that Joe has a brother named Jim. (Shin in Japanese version). Jim is apparently studying medicine but tells Joe not to be afraid to go against their father's wishes. Apparently Joe was only studying medicine because his father wished it. Upon their return to the Digi-World, Joe resumes much the same role he had before. When the group was all angry at each other in "Playing Games," Joe naturally thinks everyone's mad at him. Tai gets frustrated with Joe in "Trash Day" when Joe says he saw Matt leave but didn't do anything to stop him. At the end of "The Ultimate Clash," Joe leaves with Mimi which starts a whole new adventure for them. They meet Metal Etemon, and Ogremon, Otanamon, and Gekomon, and SabreLeomon. They also make it to Primary Village and meet Elecmon. At that point, Joe leaves Mimi in Primary Village and heads off across the ocean to find Matt and bring him back ot the others to help them defeat Piedmon.
