Matt is a rebel with an attitude. He's the ultimate cool and as proof he uses lingo like "whatever" and "da man" (Calling himself da man). He's used to being on his own and likes to do things his way. Because of this there have been many conflicts between him and Tai. Matt isn't exactly emotionally learned and he has troubles expressing himself, maybe due to the fact that he's just too scared to admit his own feelings.

As a man of few words he receives a reputation that is untrue to his inner self. He seems cold, tough, unapproachable, and as prickly as his hair, yet he really does care. Deep inside he is sensitive, loyal, protective, and introspective. Matt's first loyalty lies with his friends, and this loyalty has earned him the Crest of Friendship. Matt always has a smart joke at hand, no matter how serious the situation is he'll pull out some kind of sarcastic or witty remark. His jokes can be a little mean though. Sometimes he'll poke fun at his fellows, possibly just to keep up his tough reputation and protect his vulnerable side. Matt is really sensitive (as Tai has learned the hard way many times). No, he won't start crying, (although he did once in front of Tai, when fearing the worst for T.K.) he'll just hide his sensitive side by being overly defensive. Take a shot at Matt, his little brother, or Gabumon and you'll get a mouthful (or fistful) courtesy of da man.

Among the group of the Digi-Destined Matt has a little half-brother T.K. Being his older bro, Matt finds himself being very protective over T.K. Yet sometimes he shows his love in the wrong way. In an early episode, Tai thinks Matt is tough on T.K. and needs to learn how to be a big brother. He might not seem to care, but he is exceedingly protective over his sibling, even risking his life for him. In "Subzero Ice Punch," Matt almost froze to death looking for his lost little bro. Being somewhat anti-social and a rebel at heart, Matt doesn't follow orders very well. He especially doesn't enjoy taking orders from Tai. Matt regularly questions Tai's leadership and gets into verbal and physical fights with him. Adding to the anti-social bit, Matt'll turn himself away from the group to take a little time out playing a tune on his harmonica. That harmonica is the tool he uses to express his repressed feelings. Either way, Matt's a strong-willed soul who's developed a trustworthy relationship with his Digimon. Gabumon is always looking out for Matt and teaching him how to pick his fights and not always go in swinging. Many is the time Gabumon has tried to stop fights and help Matt watch over T.K. Gabumon seems to understand Matt the best. All in all, Matt's a really nice guy, once he lets you in. I'm not sure when that might be...

In "Prophecy," Matt gets shot by Angemon's Arrow of Hope and thus makes it possible for Gabumon to Warp Digivolve to Metal Garurumon. In "Battle for the Earth" we learn that Matt's mother's name is Nancy. Upon their return to the Digital World, Yamato resumes his antagonist position. In "Playing Games," Matt picks a fight with Tai about remembering the Digimon who died helping the Digi-Destined. Later in the episode, Matt gets frustrated when Puppetmon ties him up and takes TK with Matt unable to do anything about it. When TK escapes on his own, Matt believes that TK can now take care of himself and Matt leaves the group without telling anyone. In "Trash Day," Matt meets Cherrymon who eventually convinces him that Tai is his enemy and if Matt wants to grow, he needs to defeat Tai first. In "The Ultimate Clash," Matt returns to the group and starts fighting with Tai, who starts fighting back when Matt starts getting serious. Kari ends the fight when she makes War Greymon and Were Garurumon de-digivolve and then takes the kids to another room where they learn about their past and why they are the Digi-Destined. When they get back to the Digi-World, Tai tries to apologize to Matt, but Matt decides to take off again still wanting to learn more about himself. Matt makes a timely appearance in "Ogremon's Honor" when he defeats Puppetmon single-handedly, then leaves the group again as they all start thanking him. Little is known about what Matt does while he's gone. We know he travels all the way back to Primary Village where he loses his harmonica. In "Joe's Battle" we learn that Matt crosses the sea to another island. Joe follows him there in the same episode.

Yama's appearance in Series02. From a Japanese CD cover.

Tsunomon > Gabumon > Garurumon > Weregarurumon

WARP ULTIMATE FORM: Metal Garurumon

Gabumon is Matt's Digimon. He's there to teach Matt how to avoid confrontations and to serve as Matt's mentor. Gabumon also winds up protecting T.K. on many occasions.

ATTACKS: Tsunomon: Bubble Blast, Gabumon: Blue Blaster, Garurumon: Howling Blaster (although the voice actor has said Blue Blaster by mistake), Weregarurumon: Mega Claw, Wolf Claw, Garuru Kick. So far, Metal Garurumon appears to have the same attacks as Weregarurumon except with Metal instead. eg. Metal Claw.
