Sweet Angel of the Night

"Now?" Usagi gave a questioning look towards Setsuna.
"Now." Setsuna could see the others smile as they heard her
that single word. She knew they had all been waiting for this moment
for fifteen years. It must have been hard for them to watch and do
nothing as history unfolded.
Usagi's appearance immediately changed to that of Princess
Serenity. Calling forth the power within her, she created a force
field that surrounded her and the others in the group. It was none too
soon, as a wave of pure energy over washed their 'holy ark' and the
entire earth. The Human Complement Program had begun.

Shinji looked sadly at the world around him. Everywhere there
was desolation and destruction. He hugged Asuka closer to him. "We're
now truly alone."
"Now don't you think that assumption is a bit much?"
Shinji jerked at the sound of another voice other than his or
Asuka's. A bright light immediately blinded him. His eyes soon
cleared only to stare in awe at the goddess that descended upon them.
Asuka was not impressed. She punched Shinji in the gut to
return him to reality. Boy, he was such a pervert. Even when there
were only two women left on earth, he still looked at the other woman.
"Who are you?"
"I am Serenity." The woman in the air stated softly. She wore
a billowing white dress and her hair was tied in pigtails. "I am a
person that is very interested in the fate of humankind and I don't
think that it's fate should be decided by a single person.
Shinji blushed embarrassingly. "I didn't know that my not
joining with Lilith would end up with that." He pointed his finger to
that sky. Some red flickering light could be seen. The souls of
humans still orbited the earth after Eva 01 had caused the Angel
holding them to fall to the ground.
"But you did cause it. The girl named Rei had given you the
chance to shape destiny if you only joined with her. Why didn't you?"
"I... Uh..." Shinji was at a lost for words.
Serenity answered for him. "Because this was the reality that
you wanted. You were embittered with humanity and wanted to be done
with it all.
Shinji could not look at the pity that showed clearly on
Serenity's face.
Asuka glared at her. "So what if it's true. Everything we
did, we did it for others. Shinji piloted Eva all for the sake of his
father and all of the other selfish people in the world. Did we get
any thanks for it? No! This didn't happen because of Shinji. In the
end, those same selfish people created this mess by trying to start the
next phase of the evolutionary process. Humanity got this fate because
it deserved it."
Serenity face was speculative. "Did it really? Did humans
deserve this fate? Would you still think this to be true if you saw
the last moments of those closest to you?" In her hands, Serenity held
out a silver crystal that shone a peaceful glow.
Shinji held his head in pain as a beam of light from the
crystal touched his head. Scenes of the past flashed through his mind.
He could see all NERV's personnel slaughtered. He could see Misato
save him by pushing him into the elevator and then the explosion that
killed her. He could see his father crying. The last words he heard
were of his father begging for forgiveness before Shinji was brought
back to reality.
Serenity looked sadly at Shinji. "Your father did what he
thought was right. He had thought the ends would justify the means,
even if it meant hurting his own son in the process. After your mother
died he worked to reach the point where he could change destiny and
meet your her once more."
"Enough! Can't you see you're hurting him?" Asuka held Shinji
in a comforting embrace.
"I just wanted him to be prepared for what I am about to do.
Shinji, do you think you can live in world again filled with 'selfish'
people." Serenity smiled when Shinji nodded his head. She did not
want to have a suicidal boy on her hands when she brought everyone
back. With a wave of her hand, a group of people appeared out of thin
air. They were her friends. Then inner and outer senshi, the guardian
cats, her husband, and her First Knight were all there. "I will need
of your help to restore the world.
The others nodded in unison. They could finally do something
to help after a long fifteen years.
"Mercury Star Power!" "Mars Star Power!" "Jupiter Star Power!"
"Venus Star Power!" "Uranus Star Power!" "Neptune Star Power!"
"Saturn Star Power!" "Pluto Star Power!"
Serenity could feel the energy of the eight planets surge into
her. Her husband, Prince Endymion, touched her gently and added
Earth's power to her body. Her First Knight stood to the side watching
for any sign of trouble. Holding up the silver crystal, Serenity
pleaded for help. "Please return the lost souls back to their home."
A pulse of pure energy emitted from her body and over washed the earth.
The flickering souls around the planet slowly descended back towards
the earth.

Usagi and the rest of her friends all had the look of
contentment on their faces as they rested. To the distance, sounds of
heavy machinery moving about could be heard. The rebuilding process
was already beginning. She felt a hand touch her shoulder. It was her
First Knight.
Ranma looked towards where Shinji sat. Shinji's father,
Gendou, was also there. Both of them did were afraid to look at each
other. However, it was clear that much of the resentment between the
two was gone. They seemed happy enough just to be in the other's
presence. "You just had to take some time off from saving the world to
help one person."
Usagi knew that Ranma was just teasing her with his scolding.
She decided to return the favor. "Oh? I seem to recall a person who
regularly stops to save a damsel or two in distress before defeating
some power hungry villain." Ranma blushed, as she knew he would. He
was way past adolescent, but he still acted like a schoolboy at the
mention of the opposite sex.
"Excuse me?"
Usagi turned to see Gendou and Shinji approach her. They were
both carrying something or rather someone in their arms. It was a
young albino looking girl.
Shinji spoke first. "This is Rei. We just found her lying on
the ground nearby. I think she's still alive, but she won't wake up.
Can you help her?"
Usagi stared at the girl. "This was the one that empowered
Lilith and started the Third Impact."
"I'm sorry. That was my fault. It was I that made her in my
effort the control the next impact. She was just a pawn in my plan. I
would be most grateful if you could help her." Gendou looked
apologetic. Everything was gone. His labs, his DNA samples, and all
of the clones. This was the only connection he had left to Yui.
Usagi could never stand to see anyone hurt. "Okay. Hotaru,
can you help her?"
"Yes, as long as she still has a spark of life within her."
Hotaru put her hands to the comatose girl's body.

Rei awoke to the sight of Shinji hovering over her. She was
about to reach out to him when she saw Asuka by his side. Asuka held
Shinji's arm possessively. Shinji did not look at her. Beside Shinji
was Gendou.
Gendou also did not look at her. Even now, she reminded him
too much of his dead wife. "I'm sorry." What else could he say?
Their last moments together had not been the best of times.
"Please leave me. I would like to get some rest." Rei closed
her eyes. The past came unbidden to her. Memories of Gendou saving
her, Shinji asking her to smile, and of her sacrifice to save Shinji.
Memories not hers, but those of the second Rei. She was not her and
never would or could be. A single tear fell from her eye.
* * * * *
Usagi sighed as she looked at Ranma moping around. Both of
them had been there when Rei had woken up. Instead of the happy
reunion they were hoping to see, they saw that awful scene. "Go Ranma.
I know you want to. I'll hold down the fort. Change into a girl
before you do, okay?"
"Why?"
"Girls open up more to other girls than boys." Actually the
real reason Usagi wanted Ranma to go as a girl was that she didn't want
his bungling to bring him another suitor.
Ranma looked at her gratefully and immediately headed for where
Rei was lying.
Usagi rolled her eyes at Ranma. Ranma absolutely hated to see
a girl, any girl, cry. She had heard of the stories where Ranma was
nice to a crazy girl named Kodachi and a boy that looked like a girl
named Tsubasa because of a few tears. Usagi just hoped the other girls
didn't hear about this. It was not a pretty sight when jealousy reared
its ugly head.
* * * * *
"So how are you feeling?" Ranma-chan asked. Maybe if she
started up a conversation Rei would feel better.
Rei looked up at the girl of about eighteen years of age. She
momentarily forgot about the past as she examined the curiosity in
front of her. "Weren't you a boy before?"
"Erk! How did you know that?"
"When I awoke I saw a boy standing nearby. He wore the exactly
the same clothes as you did. I can tell the clothes are the same size
as his as it is obviously over sized on you. The sleeves on your shirt
are folded the same way. Your hair is tied up the same way as his was
to the exact number braids. You have a smudge on your cheek in the
same place he did. Your facial features are the same except yours are
more feminine looking."
Ranma stared at the girl with a look of respect. Rei got all
that from just glancing at his boy form? "Yeah, I guess you found out.
My cousin told me that girls open up more to girls, so I changed into
my cursed form. Cold water turns me into a girl and hot water changes
me back." She demonstrated by taking a hot water kettle that happened
to be nearby and spilling it onto herself. She changed into a he.
Rei did not even flinch at the sight. Instead, her mind was
wondering how a person would be willing to help her after what
happened. "I was under the impression that the people that saved me
were not at all particularly happy with my part in starting Third
Impact."
"Oh that. That's nothing. You should hear the story how Usagi
risked the fate of the world in trying to save the one that was trying
to destroy it." Hotaru had told him of the sailor senshi's fight
against the Death Busters. "That's just the way these 'saviors' are."
"Including you?"
"I... Uh guess so." Ranma stuttered as the young girl stared
at him intently.
"You remind me of Shinji with his shyness and urge to help
others that look sad." She smiled in remembrance. All of a sudden,
she held her head in pain. "These are not my memories, but those of
the second Rei."
Ranma's face was full of worry, as he looked Rei. He didn't
understand what she meant by the second Rei. He only knew that the
girl was hurt and needed help. "If these memories cause you so much
pain, forget them."
The boy in front of her again bewildered Rei. He genuinely
seemed to be worried about her. It felt nice to be cared for. "How
can I forget them? They are as much a part of me as they were a part
of my predecessor."
Ranma knew how hard it was to forget the pain of the past.
"You just have to get over it. Make new memories, happier ones, for
your self."
Make new memories for herself, the third Rei. She liked that
idea very much. She couldn't help but think that she would like the
idea better if this intriguing boy were a part of them. "Thank you."
Ranma smiled down at Rei. She seemed to be happier now. He
wondered what he said made her feel better.
Rei went back to sleep as the day's events caught up with her.
There was a smile on her lips. She knew Ranma would watch over her for
a while. The knowledge of that will be her first happy memory.
* * * * *
Way in the future...
Sweat rolled down from Ranma's brow as he concentrated all of
his strength into his push. He could feel the Absolute Terror Field
start to give way.
"Ugh!" The AT Field suddenly collapsed. Rei fell to the
ground.
Ranma looked at the fallen Rei in horror. What happened? "Are
you all right, Rei?"
Rei rose up weakly. Ranma was instantly by her side. "I'm
fine. You did it, Ranma. You've surpassed the AT Field."
"Why didn't you tell me you would get hurt if I punctured the
field, you idiot girl?" Despite his words, Ranma was very gentle as he
picked Rei into his arms.
"You were so excited about surpassing yourself. I didn't want
to ruin it for you."
"Idiot. I care more about hurting you than that." Ranma
carefully carried Rei to somewhere he could get her looked after.
Rei smiled secretly to herself. She had long since known that
Ranma was very attentive to girls that were vulnerable. She was
looking forward to a night in Ranma's loving care.
