Indian Recipe for Spicy Chicken Livers or Shahjehan Kaleja

INGREDIENTS FOR SPICY CHICKEN LIVERS

  • 1 lb chicken livers
  • 1/2 lb mushrooms (sliced thin)
  • 1 large onion (chopped fine)
  • 1 clove garlic (crushed)
  • 2 tomatoes (chopped rough)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp ground coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • salt to taste

FYI: Chicken livers are good for you! They are packed with high quality protein, vitamins and minerals. However, they are high in cholesterol, fat and calories so make sure you have a good balance diet.

Chicken livers become perishable as soon as you buy them so you will need to cook them within two days of purchasing from the stores. Beef liver offers the greatest amount of protein.

To prepare:

  • Wash and chop the chicken livers well
  • Heat oil in a skillet
  • Fry the onion and garlic till soft but not brown
  • Add in the tomatoes and all the spices: turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala, ground coriander seeds and ground cumin together
  • Stir-fry everything for 5 mins
  • Put in the livers, yogurt then salt (to taste)
  • Simmer over low heat till livers cook (20 mins)
  • Serve with plain steamed rice and grilled tomatoes (if you wish)
