Indian Dessert Recipe for Gulab Jamun (Milk Sweets in Syrup)

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups milk powder
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 4 tbsp ghee
  • 1 cup fresh milk
  • enough ghee for frying
Ingredients for Syrup
  • 3 cups plain sugar
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 cloves
  • 5 cardamons (bruised slighly)

TIP: Dust your hands with a bit of flour before rolling the balls as this will stop them from sticking too much.

To prepare:

  • In a bowl, combine the following: milk powder, self-raising flour, 4 tbsp ghee and fresh milk
  • Mix well so you get a paste that is easily handled
  • Make small little balls; about the size of big walnuts
  • Set aside
  • Heat the ghee in a heat proof pot
  • Gently fry the milk balls over low heat till you achieve a dark golden brown color
  • Drain the balls on paper towel
  • When balls are slighly cool, put them into the syrup
  • Serve warm
  • How to make the Syrup: In a saucepan, place all the ingredients for syrup and boil them till sugar dissolves
  • Remove from heat and cool a little before placing milk balls
