Dhal or Lentils dish

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup red or yellow dhal (lentils/split pea) - cleaned, washed, drained
  • 2 gloves garlic
  • 1 small piece ginger - crushed
  • 2 large potatoes - cubed
  • 1 brinjal - cubed
  • 1 dried chilli - break into large pieces
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 shallot - sliced
  • 2 cups water
  • a bit of ghee (beef fat)
  • a bit of tumeric powder
Dhal or Lentils dish


To prepare:

  • Place oil, water, crushed garlic, ginger and dhal in a pot, boil till soft
  • When dhal is cooked, add in potatoes, brinjal (eggplants) and turmeric powder
  • Cook till potatoes are tender
  • Remove pot
  • In another pot, fry chillies, shallots and mustard seeds in ghee till fragrant
  • Add in dhal and cover pot
  • Serve either with rice or chappati

Additonal ingredients may include tomatoes and lady fingers.
Alternate: Try using chick peas instead. These can be purchased in cans or dried. If you choose the dried version, remember to soak them in cold water overnight.
