Baal Koray Tips

Submitted by I. Harvey Poch (about the Tochacha)

  1. It is customary to give this aliyah to the Baal Koray so that people will not feel that he is reading dire warnings to someone else.
  2. In some synagogues, the person receiving the aliyah is not called up with 'Ya'amod ...'. He just appears and makes the brachah.
  3. 28:15 - The Tochachah begins part way through the aliyah. From that point the Baal Koray lowers his voice, except for the final half-pasuk which begins on 28:58, "l'yirah et..."; and the last Pasuk of the aliyah, 28:69.
  4. 28:27 and 28:30 - Two words in the Tochachah are not read as written. Other words are substituted.

  5. In many shuls, children face the Baal Koray in front of the bima. However, during the tochacha they shouldn't face the baal koray, so that the curses should not appear to be directed at them.

  6. 28:9, 28:13, and 28:25 - Tiqun Qor'im Khadhash shows a Kadma, whereas other Tikkuns show a Pashta.

  7. Each item in the list of Arayot starts with Arur. A mnemonic may be as follows: Remember 1-3-2-1. The first item has a Pazzer, followed by three Zakef Gadols, two Revi'is, then back again to one Zakef Gadol, and one Revi'i.
