The Girl From Uncle Tv Show Trivia:
Uncle was an acronym for the "United Network Command for Law and Enforcement".
This series was a spin-off of, "The Man From Uncle (1964)". As time went by on that show, the plot-lines got more "way out" and harder to believe and the same problem "afflicted" this series. Neither show survived this fatal mistake, although "Man From Uncle" did manage to stick around one additional season.
Probably the biggest reason, however, that this series "flopped" so badly is that Stefanie Powers' role as "April Dancer" was not exploited properly. When the real action began, April's male partner (Mark Slate) would take over and "Save the day". April would kind of stand off to the side and look concerned. This was the mid-1960s! Women were taking their places in all aspects of American life (and on other tv shows too). April should have been in there punching and kicking right along with Mark! Stephanie Powers would have been terrific in that type of role!
Mark Slate was British and had been transferred from UNCLE's London office to its New York headquarters.
Noel Harrison's father was veteran actor Rex Harrison.
There was (believe it or not) one episode of the Girl From Uncle that was actually worth watching. Episode #3, "Mother Muffin Affair", guest-starred Boris Karloff as an assassin called Mother Muffin (he's very convincing in his disguise as an old lady). Robert Vaughn also appears as Napoleon Solo from "Man From Uncle (1964)" and that alone makes this the most action-packed episode of the series!
Episode #4, "Mata Hari Affair", was written by Samuel A. Peeples who also wrote one of the best original Star Trek episodes, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (which aired just 12 days before Mata Hari Affair). He should have written another "Trek" episode as Mata Hari affair stunk pretty badly!
Perhaps the second best episode was #13, "Little John Doe Affair". It guest-starred Pernell Roberts of "Bonanza (1959)" and Wally Cox. Roberts plays a crook who has valuable knowledge about the "mob". April Dancer is supposed to be protecting him from Cox's character (a hit man who wants to silence him) but, again, when Robets' character finds himself in a life-threatening situation, April stands back and lets him defend himself! What were they thinking?
Leo G. Carroll was one of Alfred Hitcock's top choices for his movies. Leo appeared in "Rebecca (1940)", "Suspicion (1941)", "Spellbound (1945)", "The Paradine Case (1947)", "Strangers on a Train (1951)", and "North by Northwest (1959)"!
Talk about your "soap operas"! During their childhoods; Stephanie Powers, Natalie Wood and Jill St. John all attended the same ballet class. Later in life, they would all have long term love interests with Robert Wagner!
