Two of the characters had compelling reasons to join the Texas Rangers. Joe Riley had been a gunfighter and not always on the right side of the law. Joining the Rangers gave him some protection from other lawmen who might still be pursuing him. Chad Cooper had previously been a member of the border patrol and had lost many of his comrads while fighting Mexicans. As a Texas Ranger, he had the authority to go after American gun-runners who had sold weapons to those Mexicans.
