Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) has earned over $500 Million in syndication and merchandising income.
The first ever manned flight by the Wright brothers was in an airplane named "Bird of Prey!
Upon close inspection of the Enterprise during the opening credits fly-by, you can see someone walking through the windows.
Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) and Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) originally had each other's parts! They only switched to the parts we know them by so well shortly before filming on Star Trek The Next Generation began!
The roles of William Riker and Deanna Troi are based upon Decker and Ilia from the first Star Trek movie.
The shuttle Onizuka was named after one of the Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts. Data flew it in one of the episodes titled, "Ensigns of Command".
Geordi LaForge is named after a real Star Trek fan named George LaForge who died from muscular dystrophy in 1975.
During shooting of one of the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes titled, "The Best of Both Worlds - Part II", LeVar Burton was in the hospital for surgery. Another actor was used in many of the scenes, and LeVar did the closeups.
Before acting, Patrick Stewart was a journalist.
Of all the original series and next generation episodes PLUS all the movies, only the Star Trek The Next Generation tv show episodes "Family" and "Liaisons" contain no scenes on the bridge.
LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge) played a lead role in the TV miniseries "Roots". In one of those episodes titled, "The Gift" which aired in 1988, not only did he appear but Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway - Voyager), Tim Russ (Tuvok - Voyager) and Avery Brooks (Capt. Sisko - Deep Space Nine) also appeared in the program. Freaky huh?
The scripts for the episodes, "The Child" and "Devil's Due" were originally were originally written for the proposed "Star Trek: Phase II" tv show which was later terminated.
In the episode "Sub Rosa", the inscription on one of the gravestones reads "McFly" taken from the movie Back to the Future.
Professor Stephen Hawking is the only person to have ever appeared as himself on any of the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes. He appeared shortly at the beginning of the episode "Descent". There was also a shuttle named after him that you can see in, "The Host". Professor Hawking originally was simply visiting the set and asked to be taken out of his wheelchair to be seated in the Captain's chair. He was delighted when, in addition to sitting in Picard's seat, he also had the opportunity to appear as a cast member!
