About

Databases are not intuitive, like some other programs. Even expert computer users can be frustrated when faced with a blank screen, which forces them to create their own computing environment. A great deal of preliminary knowledge is required in order to set up the database.

It's almost unfair to ask people to grow this knowledge from the air.

That's why we created the Databasics forum.

Databasics subscribers submit queries and receive responses from subscribers around the world.

Our collective information and background and knowledge can help each other be successful in our database work.

If you're shy, just read the questions and answers from others. You will learn a great deal.

Topics

This following list of issues raised on the Databasics forum is not comprehensive. Subscribers may ask other relevant questions as well. However, it offers some ideas of our focus.

  • Queries about database features
  • Queries about features working in any language
  • Queries about features when using any platform
  • Conversion from one database to another
  • Conversion among databases that use different platforms
  • Collaboration among users
  • Questions about using a database to update a web page
  • Workarounds for bugs in databases
  • Conversion of certain unique features from one database to another
  • Adding graphics or spreadsheets to a database
  • Working with database macros or reports
  • Switching to a different database
  • Using online databases
  • Preserving settings or special features when upgrading a database

Guidelines

Issues relating to Hebrew or right-to-left database work should be posted on the Hebrew Computing forum.

Representatives of various database systems have been asked to join Databasics. You can therefore submit bug reports to the group, with the following specific information:

  • The name of the database
  • The version
  • The specific problem
  • When the problem is noticed
  • What issues seem to trigger the bug
  • Proposed or requested solution

Who should join

The Databasics forum is designed for anybody who does word processing in any language and under any platform. That includes the following groups of people:

  • Experts in a specific database
  • Developers of databases
  • Users of databases
  • Those who input data into databases
  • People who want to know about databases
  • Executives who do not use databases but want to know what features are available
  • Agencies that hire keyboarders
  • Agencies that hire people who know about databases
  • Professionals who use databases in the course of their work
  • Programmers, developers, and designers of databases
