Lyrics
of Syd Barrett
|
||||||||||
As Barrett's friend Mick Rock once noted, many of Syd's songs could stand on their own as the work of a highly gifted poet. Here, we collect Barrett's lyrics, written from c.1962 to 1970, It is somehow fitting that he ended his recorded output with the first song he ever wrote, when he was just 16, 'Effervescing Elephant'. | ||||||||||
'The
Piper at the Gates of Dawn'
These comprise the cream of Barrett's work with the Pink Floyd, from the outer space musings of 'Astronomy Domine' to the whimsy of 'Bike', which ends on a chilling coda. For all those who wonder what the fuss is when people speak of Barrett, a look here is warranted. (1966-1967) The Singles & Miscellany From an early poem 'Rooftop in a Thuderstorm Row Missing the Point' to his epochael singles of that long-gone psychedelic summer; 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play'. Included also are the lyrics to his unreleased works, 'Scream Thy Last Scream' and 'Vegetable Man', as well as other various others, such as '(She was a) Millionaire' and the semi-mythic 'Bob Dylan's Blues' (c. 1966-1970) 'The Madcap Laughs' Reflecting on his inner turmoil, Barrett composed a ragged and brilliant masterwork of 12 songs. Included is a song cycle about love, lost and found. (1969) 'Barrett' Barrett's second eponymous album was one that alternated between lyrics paeans of love regained and others which reflected the growing turbulence in his private life. Bolstered (and some would say dampened) by David Gilmour's production, 'Barrett' contains some of Syd's most hummable melodies. (1970) 'Opel' A collection of out-takes from the sessions for his two albums, 'Opel' featured several unreleased songs, some of them extremely compelling even in their unifinished state, chief among them the title track.
