I have many interests. Two of them are Astronomy and Photography. I like stars since I was primany one. At that time, there was a suject called science. In the science textbook, as I can remember now, I could see the pictures of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon, which started to induce my interest in Astronomy. But my development on astronomy study didn't begin until I was F.1, when I was promoted to study in Wah Yan College, Kowloon. There is a large library accomodating nearly 3000 books, by which I could see many pictures of the deep sky objects. I also regularly read the magazine "Newton" to update my news on astronomy. In F.4, Vincent Fung, who was the Chairman of Astronomy Club, invited me to be the Publication Secretary of the Club. In that year, I published a club magazine of 50 pages, which covers the nine planets and the Sun in the Solar System. Through the editing of this book, I learnt much about the Solar System and computer work.
I became the Chairman of the Club after two years, when I was promoted to F.6. I was also a member of the Joint School Astronomical Society at that time. At the beginning of the academic year, I set two main goals: to arouse students' appreciation and interest in astronomy and to enrich their knowledge of it. To accomplish our objectives, a series of activities, such as the Club Badge Design Competition, lectures, video shows and a winter camp were organized after the formation of the executive committee in late September. They all received satisfactory responses. Among the above functions, the most welcomed one was the winter camp. The participants had practical experience of star observation and knowledge was exchanged between them in the Wu Kai Sha Youth Village despite the cold weather.
At the beginning of the second semester started from January, 1997, we sitted in a competition among the secondary schools held by the Space Museum. Unfortunately, we only got the fourth out of 50. Although the result is unsatisfactory, we gained much experience and knowledge through this event.
An Astronomy Week was launched in March of 1997. It included lectures, slide shows, video shows, a book exhibition and souvenir selling. All programmes were obviously welcomed by
members and a marvellous response was received. In April, a camp is organized with Marymount Secondary School. It received good feedback from the students as the weather was fine on that day so that we could observe many stars and constellations. Futhermore, a regular observation team, which aimed at providing opportunities for members to recognize the constellations at night, was formed later. It gave us much encouragement since the team was greatly supported by the members.
At the end of last term, the number of members recruited went over 200. Without the members' enthusiasm, I
believe that the club would not have been so successful and fruitful. Heartfelt thanks must be conveyed to those
who have contributed efforts to the club, especially all committee members and the two advisers, namely, Mr.
Keung Yiu Ming and Mr. Lee Kwok Keung, for their precious advice, helpful support and unfailing guidance. I
look forward to seeing a bright prospect for our club in the future.
In F.7, I had to work hard on the Advanced Level Examination, so I haven't put much time on the study of Astronomy. But still, I spent some time on updating the astronomy news. In the summer vacation after the exam in 1998, I attended many courses and lectures and bought many books to upgrade and further my study on astronomy.
Through the study on astronomy, I learnt much on the history of time -- really the time, not only the fact. Have any one of you think about what TIME really is? Is it just what is shown by a clock? Many people have been working on this issue from century to century, but still no one can give a complete picture of this. It induces me to think of the questions: Who am I? What are the signficance of our existence in the universe? Is the Earth just a laboratory and are human beings created by what we called "alien", who is actually our "creator"? I think these questions should be left for thought.
I like taking photos since F.4, but I haven't got my own camera until F.6, when I was the Vice-chairman of the Photography Society. My camera model is Canon EOS 500N and I spent much of my save on the accessories, such as an ultraviolet lens, a starlit lens, a soft lens, a 14-28 wide angle lens, a 28-70mm mid-range lens, a 80-300mm lens, a 2X magnification lens, a flash-light and a tripod. From F.6, I have been taking not less than 1500 photos with satifactory appearance. I like taking photos of people with natural posture and sometimes I would take photos of the stars too.
