There is this woman. She is 74 years old and was diagnosed six months ago with Stage IV uterine cancer. She has chosen to undergo double dose chemotherapy, massive surgery including a hysterectomy, kidney removal and colostomy, more chemotherapy, and blood transfusions. This woman still sees the bright side of every single day. The incredible thing is that her cancer has changed her...she did not used to have the perspective on life that she now has...I once read that cancer is a "crash course in the meaning of life," and I now know that to be true. This woman has more fighting spirit than a college cheerleader....more optimism than a recent college graduate...more joy at the thought of being alive every day than a brand new mom. She is living with fatigue, nausea, weakness, incredible losses that healthy people cannot even begin to imagine....not just little losses, like her hair, her appetite...I mean big losses...like living her life independently and freely...she has to be catheterized several times a day by her husband...she is homebound and praying for the time when the treatments will be done and she can have some good quality life with her family, her God, herself...but throughout the horrendous ordeal cancer has wrought upon her life, her very soul, she never, ever complains. Instead, she says that "this, too, shall pass." She watches the birds with a gleam in her eye...she drinks in her children who lovingly sit at her feet and drink her in...this woman is like nobody I've ever met before. And she has taught me more in the last six months than I have learned in the last ten years. This woman is my hero. This woman is my mother. May God bless her as much as she's blessed me.
