AOL Tips page

Ever wonder how to do something but wasn't sure  how or

was afraid to ask someone?

Well here is your chance to find out and no one will know you did  :-)

Ever logon to AOL and can't get to a message board?

Or for some dumb reason, you can't read your mail?

There is always a reason!

Go to KEYWORD: PULSE OF AOL

There you will see updated information for current or upcoming

routine AOL maintenence for Mail, message boards etc!

How much mail does my mailbox hold?

Easy answer!

A LOT
AOL gives you space to store up to 1000 pieces of NEW mail,

550 pieces of OLD mail. and 550 pieces of SENT mail

per each screenanme on your account on its host system at any given time.

Unread mail is considered most important!
Mail will be deleted from your MAIL YOU HAVE SENT

and MAIL YOU HAVE READ folders, even if it has been less than two days!

If you want to keep that mail- see the next section about PFC

(personal filing cabinet)

Personal Filing Cabinet

1) click on the MY AOL Icon on your toolbar and select PREFERENCES

2) Click the mail button( a mail preferences window will appear)

3) Click RETAIN ALL MAIL I SEND & ALL MAIL RECIEVED

to my Personal filing cabinet

Mail in your PFC can be read offline :-)

Want to keep that mail on a disk instead?

That's easy too!

1) Click on the read icon, and click the OLD MAIL tab

2)Double click on the message you want to save

3) From the file menu, click SAVE AS(A standard dialog box will appear)

4) Navigate to the location where you want the mail to be stored

5) Type a FILENAME in the FILENAME .BOX

(make note of the name & where you put it, I highly recommend

making a new folder in your WINDOWS Directory just for this)

6) Click save, and your mail is now stored on your hard drive!

One thing about your AOL PFC :
CLEAN THAT BAD BOY OUT!

If you log onto AOL and it seems slower than usual and you are a

heavy user of AOL and get lots of mail, from time to time your PFC will need

a cleaning and a compressing!

Simple to clean it out also!!

Simply access your filing cabinet from the MY FIling cabinet

then highlight and look through what you want to delete then select delete and do this until your PFC is at the desired level for you, then hit COMPACT

all done, AOL will run better too!

Turn those IMS off I wanna surf!! BUT HOW???

EASY!!

Open a new IM and in the send line type this

$IM_OFF then hit available

to turn them back on

$IM_ON

then hit available :-)

(note: Logging off automatically turns your IMS back on!)

PASSWORDS
Protect your account from hackers!

Make your password at least 6 characters long

and use ALPHA NUMERIC choices

Password stealer programs have more trouble

decoding ALPHA NUMERIC than words or just numbers alone :-)

WHAT VERSION OF AOL DO I HAVE ?
Ever call AOL for tech help and they need to know your version?

Or ever see something Online you want to download but you need to know if it is compatible with your version of AOL?
SIMPLE!
Click the HELP at the top above the toolbar, then select

ABOUT AMERICA ONLINE
a screen will popup telling you what version you have

(if you need the revision# just hit CNTRL R after the above step and another screen will pop-up telling you)

For those who don't know

AOL uses a version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer

Well in all honesty NETSCAPE has the superior product

Click below and go get NETSCAPE'S

stand alone browser for your computer!
Web pages look better when viewed with

NETSCAPE Navigator 4.08

How do I clean out my Cache?

AOL's built in browser comes with a cache, or temporary storage place. Images and text from Web pages you visit are stored on your hard drive for fast reloading when you return to them while you're still logged on. When the cache fills up, performance can slow down.

How To Empty Your Browser's Cache if you are using AOL 4.0 for Windows.

1. From the My AOL menu on the toolbar, select Preferences.

2. Select the WWW icon.

3. Under the Advanced tab, click Settings, Empty Folder, click Yes. Or, under the General tab, click the Delete Files button found beneath the Temporary Internet Files heading, click OK

NOTE:
this is NOT the same as your temporary internet files.

To Clean out Temp Internet Files

Right click on the Start Button, and select EXPLORE
then locate your tempoary internet folder

then select EDIT, then SELECT ALL,

then hit DELETE. This will clean out your temporary internet files!

This needs to be done from time to time for the love of your computer!

I don't like where my windows sit!
ok easy to fix...
