PRAYERS FOR A SMALL CHILD
NAMED MATT
Last week I read a story in our local
newspaper about a small child, three years of age,
that had been severley burned over 77% of his body.
His name is Matt Watson, son of Jeff and Shelly Watson.
He is now in the Shriner's Burn Center
in Cincinatti,Ohio in critical condition.
He regained consciousness on Friday and recognized
his mother.
This morning the initial grafting took place
using cadaver skin.
A hospital spokesperson,Pat Harris,
said that Matt had damaged and dead tissue removed (excised)
where the burned areas are.
Later today, doctor's
grafted his hands, arms and legs.On Thursday or
Friday they will graft his trunk. They will also do his head as soon as they can.
Matt has a trachea tube in his throat because there is
a serious danger of swelling in a child this small.
This
swelling could interfere with his breathing.
The incident took place on Feb 24th, when Matt
was playing with a child-proof butane lighter,
catching his clothing on fire.
His parents, Jeff and Shelly Watson doused their son
in the bathtub.
Matt will return to Shands Hospital in Gainsville,
Florida, about 40 miles from here to continue his
recovery as soon as possible.
His parents are staying with him at the Shriners Center,
in the hospital's family care unit.
Matt was taken to Shriners Burn Center from Shands because
they provide care for burned children without charge.
Meanwhile the couple's other three children have been taken
into protective custody by the Florida Dept.
of Children and Families pending the outcome of the
investigation of this tragic accident.
As this situation continues, I will add to this
journal, to keep everyone posted as to his progress.
I want to thank all of you for your prayers, and your
gifts to this small child and his family.
