Originally build as Hanoverian for Fredrick Leyland & Co, she was launched on February 25, 1902 and completed in June of the same year. She made her maiden voyage on July 19, 1902 from Liverpool to Boston. In April 1903 she was transferred to Dominion Line, Liverpool and renamed Mayflower. She made her first voyage as the Mayflower on April 9, 1903 from Liverpool to Boston. In November 1903 she was again transferred. This time to the White Star Line, Liverpool and renamed Cretic. Her first White Star Line voyage was on November 26, 1903 sailing from Liverpool to Boston. In 1904 she entered into the New York to Mediterranean route. Between 1915 and 1919 she was used as troop and supply transport. She operated under the Liner Requisition Scheme between 1917 and 1919. In 1919 she was put back onto the New York to Mediterranean route, with accommodation for 300-1st Class, 200-2nd Class and 800-3rd Class passengers. In 1923 the Cretic was sold to Fredrick Leyland -- Leyland Line, Liverpool and renamed Devonian. She then sailed the Liverpool to Boston service. From 1927 to 1928 she was operated by Red Star Line, on the Antwerp-Southampton-New York route. On March 9, 1928 she made her last voyage and was then laid up.
