Man & Wolf...an Anishinabe Legend!

A long time ago when the earth was new, the Anishinabe were told by the Great Spirit their job was to walk the earth and name all of the animals, plants, rivers, mountains and lands. They identified the plants, which ones were good to eat, which ones were medicines. They named all the waters and mountains. They also named all of the animals and found that each one had its own wisdom and all came in pairs and reproduced. Yet Anishinabe was all alone. Anishinable spoke to the Great Spirt and asked, Why am I alone? Great Spirit told them, I will give you a friend. He sent Wolf.......

Anishinabe was happy and asked Great Spirt, What more would you have me do? Great Spirit said, Now that you have a friend, you must walk the earth together and visit all the places again. In this journey they became more than friends, they became like brothers. When it was done the Great Spirit told both Anishinabe and Wolf, Now it is time to go on separate paths. But your way is the same. What happens to one will happen to the other. Each of you will be feared, respected, and misunderstood by the people that will one day share the earth with you.

Both Anishinabe and Wolf mate for life. Both have a tribe and a clan system. Both have had their land taken from them. Both have been hunted for their hair. And both were pushed toward extinction. The miracle here is when we look at the many things that brother Wolf has endured, we can see a better future. We see that Wolf is returning and gaining strength in the places where he was once destroyed. This teaches us the Anishinabe people will also return and gain strength in the places where we were destroyed. Perhaps we will lead the way to natural living, teaching the newcomers to this land to respect Mother Earth and all of creation and to live by her perfect laws.

We will be known by the tracks we leave behind.

Wolf

Teaching, A Guide to the Sacred (from Powersource)

Wolves have been long regarded by Native Americans as teachers or pathfinders.
Wolves are fiercely loyal to their mates, and have a strong sense of family while maintaining individualism. In the stars, Wolf is represented by the Dog, Sirius, thought by many abroginal tribes to be the home of the "Ancients." It seems to be through this connection that Wolf has come to be associated with ancient teachings. Wolves are probably the most misunderstood of the wild animals. Tales of cold bloodedness abound, in spite of the their friendly, social and intelligent traits. They are truly free spirits even though their packs are highly organized. They seem to go out of their way to avoid a fight. One is rarely necessary when a shift in posture, a growl, or a glance gets the point across quite readily. Traditionally, someone with Wolf Medicine has a strong sense of self, and communicates well through subtle changes in voice inflection and body movements. They often find new solutions to problems while providing stability and support that one normally associates with a family structure.
