Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel opened on July 10th, 1887. The Grand Hotel was built by the Grand Rapids, Indiana, and Michigan Central Railroads and the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company.
It is built of Michigan white pine and features a magnificent colonial porch (longest in the world) overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. It is an example of gracious living seldom seen today.

At 660 feet, Grand Hotel's front porch is the world's longest, and is visible as you approach the Island from Lake Michigan.
No motorized vehicles are allowed on Michigan's Mackinac Island. All transportation is provided by horse and carriage or bicycle. Mackinac Island is accessible only by ferry boat or plane.
While more than 1 million people visit Mackinac Island each year, the Island has only 600 year-round residents.
