Creating a Web Page (This line is 36 Bold)
Using Netscape Communicator (This line is 24)
Netscape Communicator is a WYSIWYG Web Page tool.
This means "What you see is what you get".
(This paragraph is 14.  It is centered)
I suggest printing out these instructions to follow as you go.  Be sure to bookmark this page.  Try the various steps and experiment until you get the effects you want.  Try the text styles, size and color buttons.  Use bold text (A), italics (A) and the underscore (A).  Study the other buttons at the top of the Composer.  To change something already typed remember to highlight the text you want to change.  (This paragraph is 14.  It is aligned left)
The above is a table of 4 rows. 1 column - See settings described below.

Start of new table using a caption above the table.  Each paragraph is a separate row.

Follow these steps to creating your web page.
1.   Open your Netscape Communicator
2.   Click File (upper left corner)
3.   Point to "New"
4.   Click "Blank Page"  A blank page will open for you to start creating.
5.   Click on "Format"
6.   Click on "Page Colors & Properties"
7.   Choose colors of Normal Text, Link Text, Active Link Text, Followed Link Text and Background.
8.  Click Apply then Close.
I use tables to better align my page and as an aid in spacing paragraphs etc.  See the blinking cursor in the upper left of your page.  Make sure it is at the very top by hitting your backspace until it is at the top of the page.  To start a table that is invisible to your viewers (like used on this page) follow the steps below.  If you would like to see how this page looks in Composer, click on File/Edit Page.  This page will open with the dotted lines of the table visible to you.
9.   Click the Table button.
10.  Enter the following settings:
  • # of rows = 1 or 1 row for each paragraph etc.  You can add rows by positioning your cursor in the last row of your table and pressing "Tab" on your keyboard.
  • # of columns = 1
  • Place a dot in "center"
  • Border width = 0
  • Cell spacing = 10
  • Cell padding = 10
  • Table width - 95 % of window
  • Click apply then close
I used the 5th button from the right in the line above this page to create this tabbed list.  Click the list button then type a line and hit enter.  It places a dot before each line.  To end the list hit enter and then hit the list button again and the next line you type will not be dotted.
11.  Now you are ready to start creating the content of your page.  Remember that blinking bar.  That is where you will type.  Position this cursor in the top row of your table.  This will start your text at the left edge of your table.  To change the alignment click on the last button in the line above the page.   Click the alignment of your choice.
12.  I save the very top row for my geoguide.  By placing this geoguide on your page prevents the pop-up advertising from distracting your viewers.  GO HERE to read about the geoguide.  If you have questions or problems configuring your geoguide contact your Community Leader.
To add the geoguide to your page:
  1. 1.  Position the cursor in the top row and align center as described above.
  2. 2.  Click "Insert"
  3. 3.  Click "HTML Tag"
  4. 4.  Type in this code exactly as it is here:
  5. 5.  Click OK  A yellow tag will appear on your page.  This will be read when browsed.
(I used the 4th button from the right for this numbered list in the same manner as stated above)
13.  You are now ready to start typing you text.  Add your heading in the 2nd row.
14.  Add each paragraph in a separate row.
15.  When you get a couple of paragraphs created it is time to save this file to your web page folder.  This only saves it on your hard drive.  It will not appear on the net until it is uploaded.  Follow these steps to save your work:
  • Click File
  • Click Save As...
  • Name your page.  If this is the first page of your site it must be named index.html.  Additional pages can be named anything you like.  Example:  page2.html  It is recommended you title all your pages with .html instead of htm.  If you do not type the .html after your title it will name it htm.....so type in the .html also.
  • A second dialog box then opens.  This is to title the page as your visitors will see it in their bookmarks and at the top of the page when they are viewing it.  Example: this page is wysiwyg.html but it appears as "Creating Web Pages with Netscape Communicator" when bookmarked and at the top of this page.
  • Be sure to save this to your web page folder so you can find it again.  All images used on a page will be saved with the page.
  • After you have titled your page you should click the "Save" button every couple of paragraphs.  This will insure that your hard work is not lost.  Always save before previewing or closing the page.
16.  To create a link on your page, follow these steps:
  • Highlight the words or image you wish to make as a link.
  • Click the "Link" button
  • Type in the complete exact URL of the site you want to link to.
  • Click apply then close
  • To create an e-mail link, type this instead of a URL:  mailto:(your exact e-mail address)
If you want to add graphics to your page, check out my other Tutorials.  If your have problems or questions, contact you Community Leader or E-mail Me
When your page is complete and the way you like it, you are ready to upload your files to the Geocities server.
  • Enter your file manager with your user name and password
  • Scroll down to EZ Upload
  • Click Browse
  • Find the file you want and click it and open it to your file manager.
  • Repeat this with every file on the page including all images, sound and background (If an image is used for your background)
  • Click Upload Files
  • Go to your Geoguide manager and activate the geoguide.
  • View your page.  If you made changes to the page after it was uploaded, remember to reload the page as not to view your cache copy.  You do want to see the newest page.
