This is a billabong in the Lakefield National Park in Far North Queensland. We were on our way back from a trip to the tip of Cape York Peninsula and this was a wonderful stop for several hours.
A 'billabong' is a waterhole near a creek or river. It is often a part of the waterway that has got cut off and now forms a separate waterhole.
In our northern parts, the billabongs are like an oasis but never to be taken at their face value of a nice peaceful place to take a dip and cool off. They are often the home for crocodiles who take exception to sharing their bath water with the rest of us!!!
This is just the sort of place that the bunyip would have lurked too. To find out more about him, click here
