SAILING CANOES and SEA CANOEING

ISLAND CANOE'S PICTURE PAGE

Guillemot

The Guillemot, 16 ft. ketch rigged, decked sailing canoe with self-bailing cockpit. Lapstrake construction with plywood deck. Had a sliding centerboard like the Yakaboo, but I replaced it with a standard board and added a rudder.

We enjoy sailing open canoes on tidal waters. We go where the sea kayaks go and when the wind is right we sail. It's a blast. Our sail rig is designed for cruising and we use whitewater air bags for flotation in case of a capsize. Somethimes we wear dinghy suits or wet suits for added safety and we always wear our PFDs. The whitewater airbags make a canoe easy to self rescue. It's easier than a wet reentry of a sea kayak. If you have any questions about sea canoeing or canoe sailing, put them in the guestbook.

Barkeley Sound

In our sailing canoe the Island Cruiser off West coast of Vancouver Island. We made 5 knots sailing from Florencia Island to Little Bay near Ucluelet (after the wind picked up).

Interesting places we have sailed our open canoe: Puget Sound, Willipa Bay, Strait of Juan de Fuca, San Juan Islands, Point of Arches, La Push, Neah Bay, West Coast of Vancouver Island including Barkley Sound, Claquot Sound, Nootka Sound, Rolling Roadsted, Bunsby Islands, Rugged Point. We have paddled the canoe around Cape Flattery 7 times, Tatoosh Island 5 times. We rounded Cape Beale on Vancouver Island once from Pachina Bay to Bamfield and went out and back to Cape Beale from Diana Island twice. These places are suitable for prudent and skilled canoeists, but haven't been explored by canoe much since the Native Americans frequented them in their fabulous seaworthy canoes.

Island cruiser

The Island Cruiser at Yellow Island in the San Juans

Top measured speed was 5.9 knots with 50 sq ft sail. We can handle winds up to 20 knots with the 35 sq ft cruising sail. Surprisingly the Island Cruiser will rise up and plane in the right conditions with either sail. In heavy winds we find it's a wet ride when beating into the wind close hauled. A close reach is faster and dryer.
