Khong's 50 Waterfalls of Malaysia
For your weekends plan, Waterfalls as theme - Places your family can go to for picnic!
By August 2008, this web site of mine on Waterfalls will be 10 years old. It is a personal triumph and hearty feeling to know that the site remained posted, even though it has not being properly and punctually updated. To celebrate and reinforced this happy feelings of mine, the waterfall site deserve a new lease of life. I will try to make it more meaningful with my 2 cents worth of knowledge. Hope what is written will help in guiding you to better weekends destinations. |
Waterfalls from the Northern States are:-
Mentioning the State or the names of town may not ring a bell to many people. Individuals are too engrossed with their own sets of priorities. Names are something they have heard of, but unfamiliar of its settings, hence the directions given do not make much sense. But for example, I mention of Penang as a starting point for the north, that should bring in more confidence. So I will adopt this style for this main page Most of us are looking for a nice scenic place, clean and quiet to play. To have a day of change and the great outdoor. Up till now it is still relevant to have Waterfall as the best theme for such an undertaking. Waterfall eh? When it comes to Penang, years ago, I am talking about 1950 - there were still waterfalls. In fact our favorite swimming place was "Waterfalls" in the Botanical Garden. The stretch of river at its entrance itself with clear waters, was where we could swim, caught fishes or prawn. Sadly, these places, considered pristine are just memories for the older set. Today, secluded places in Penang ? Try Pantai Kerachut for an outing. Still I have included one waterfall, the only one known, for daddies to show their young ones what a natural waterfall would look like. For those starting from Penang, still seeking somewhere cool. Wants to hear the sounds of rushing waters, do not feel despair. A little more effort and whale of a time will fill your memory for some time. I am talking about some 1st class Waterfalls found in Kedah state. Reach out and you won't regret. After you have finished with those in Kedah, there are more further south in Perak State. |

If you are starting out from Ipoh. At the midriff of Peninsula Malaysia, the Main Range is fairly inland. Moisture flowing from the Indian Ocean would have been "hijacked" and down loaded to the insolated hills near Bidor and Kuala Kangsar. There are some notable Waterfalls' destination like Lata Kinjang in Tapah. Next, I will turn on the chances of an adventurous or family outing originating from Kuala Lumpur. There are plenty of destinations within the perimeter of an hour and half drive. The principal water shed areas are the valleys in Ulu Langat and that of Pertak - the latter is source of the Selangor River. Of the 2, Ulu langat is a very wet area, the terrain is that of with rocky hills. This is the land for picnic and some serious climbing. Pertak - less rocky hills but the river larger and Waterfalls, taller. Turning the attention away from Selangor State, if you lucky enough to be residents of the Klang Valley, then you must have heard of the mysterious and adventure Land - Pahang. A state with such a large land mass and really has plenty to offer -if you know where to head for. In Pahang, the Main Range is quite far inland from the South China Seas. With more moisture coming in from Straits of Malacca, the eastern slopes are more often than not, the leeward side. They do not receive that much of rainfall when compared to the slopes in Fraser Hills or Ulu Langat. So, you need not look for Waterfalls at the Main range on Pahang side. Then, there are few stand alone mountains and hills -namely the Benum Mountain near Raub and the Berkelah Mountains in Gambang. These highlands tap the moisture coming in from the South China Seas and resulting in highly visible and famed waterfalls. Then towards the southern edge of the Main Range, the hills there are low enough for moisture to be carried over to the eastern slope. Here in Pahang side are few hidden waterfalls. The list for Selangor & Pahang look like this. |

Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is small circular state on the plain. In fact this so-called plain is Klang Valley. At its fringes near the Klang Gate area [already inside the a narrow strip of Selangor territory] are the massive cliffs of the Quartz Ridge. This vicinity is so urbanized that even though you enter the jungles from Melawati, you would hardly feel that you left the city. Here, hidden among the cliffs and jungle are waterfalls waiting for the gung-ho and adventurous spirit. |

Again as I have written earlier, the eastern slope of high mountains of the Main Range are too far from the seas. Moreover moisture from the South China sea is seasonal. There are far less noticeable waterfalls in the East Coast when compared to the large number of picnic areas popularized in the west coast state. But I must also mention that though few Waterfalls seen here on the East Coast, are the most impressive. The draw back for visitors who wish to check them out, is the great distance to be traveled to be able to enjoy these magnificent sights of nature. |

Lastly, most visitors to my sites are Singaporeans who missed the convenience of these great outdoor destinations. When you are in the vicinity of Malacca or simply cross over for a day trip into Johore, there are several nature's offerings. They are fairly close to the Causeway too. On one hand not difficult to be there, these few great outdoor places are not in the same class as the Waterfalls further north. Secondly, with the scarcity in good picnic spots, large crowd focusing on too few sites do bring in new compromises. So be prepared - your pleasure for the day may be curtailed. For the younger set, they have more opportunities to organize themselves into outing groups to tap the few world class destinations like Endau Rompin, Ledang or even venture out to Negri Sembilan. |
