Pinewood Derby Date Changed

Date for Pack Pinewood Derby changed to April 15

The date for the Pack 255 Pinewood Derby has been changed to April 15. Registration begins at 9:30, and the races start at 10:30 Our local Scout Shop ran out of Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits before most of our Scouts obtained a kit, so the date of our Derby was moved to assure that every Scout has plenty of time to complete a car. We have received cars from another source and those cars have been distributed to the Den Leaders for Den 8 and the Flying Eagles. Den 2 should be commended for obtaining their cars before our Scout Shop ran out. If anyone did not receive a kit, contact your Den Leader or Mike White at 835-0627. I was at the Scout Shop this week, and they did have some kits. In addition, extra kits can be obtained from the Scout Shop in Memphis. Also, the basic block of wood can be obtained at Hobby Lobby or Michaels, but be aware that only official B.S.A. wheels and axles can used. Our local Scout Shop had a few sets of wheels and axles when I was there. Pre-cut cars which are available at Hobby Lobby and Michaels may be used for the Speed Competition, but they will not be eligible for the Best of Show Competition. After the Cub Scout Speed Competition and Best of Show Competition, we will have a race that is open to parents, siblings, and about anyone else. See the rules for details.

You were previously given the basic rules for our Pack's Pinewood Derby. An expanded set of rules is included with this newsletter. The design specifications included in the expanded rules are the same as the specifications that you previously received. Please pay close attention to these design specifications. Our Pack rules are more strict than the specifications that are included with the Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kits. STRICT COMPLIANCE WITH OUR PACK RULES WILL BE REQUIRED. Our rules prohibit designs that would give a car a clear advantage over cars built in compliance with our rules. While the last thing we want to do is prevent any Scout from racing, we also do not want any Scout who has built a car in compliance with our rules to be placed at an unfair disadvantage.

The expanded rules do contain some changes in the procedures that will be used on race day. These changes are intended to assure that the fastest cars win.

Pack Meeting: March 21

The next Pack meeting will be Tuesday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. This meeting was not on the original calendar but was scheduled during the last leaders' meeting in anticipation of a large number of Cub Scouts advancing in rank.

Blue and Gold Banquet Takes Pack 255 Back in Time

The theme of this years Blue and Gold Banquet was Turn Back the Clock. We celebrated the anniversary of Scouting, enjoyed great food and enjoyed even better entertainment, as each Den presented a skit which truly took us back in time. Once again, we thank Carla Nadzam, the chairperson of this years event, all the members of her committee, and everyone else who helped make this event really special. Good job!

Scout Expo - April 8

This years Scout Expo will be April 8. Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops, and Explorer Units from all over the Quapaw Area Council participate in this event. There will be many fun activities and crafts to enjoy and many interesting demonstrations to see. This is a good opportunity for our Cub Scouts to learn what Scouting and the Scouting spirit is all about. This year the event will be held at Riverfront Park, in Little Rock. We will begin setting up our booth at 9:00 a.m., and the booth must be manned between the hours of 12:00p.m and 4:00p.m. A sufficient number of Scouts and adults must be at the booth at all times. Each Den will be assigned a time to work at the booth.

Our theme this year will be "Bugged About Trash." We will try to encourage trash pick-up at the site of the Expo by constructing a "trash bug" with trash picked up at the site. Each one of our visitors who "donates" trash to our trash bug will get to make their own trash bug that really flies! Each Den will be asked to help prepare decorations and other needed materials for our booth, and each Den Leader will be provided information about what is needed within the next few days.

All Cub Scouts should wear their uniforms to the Expo, and the uniform should be worn properly, including a neckerchief or Cub Scout bolo. Our visitors will form an opinion of Scouting and of Pack 255, and that opinion will be based in part on our appearance.

Pack Dues

A statement of the Pack dues owed by each Scout is included with this newsletter. Payment can be made in full or by installments. A table will be set-up at the beginning of the Pack meeting where dues can be paid. I have made every effort to assure that the amounts reflected on these statements are accurate. However, since this is the first time statements have been generated, there may be some mistakes. If there is a mistake on your statement, remain calm. Do not scream, holler, yell, or kick the dog. Do not call me and scream, holler, yell. Do not kick me. Do calmly call me and make me aware of the error, and I will correct it.

Service Projects

As you are all aware, Pack 255 sang Christmas Carols for the residents of the Retirement Center before Christmas. All of the residents certainly enjoyed the event, and it was a rewarding and worthwhile experience for everyone who participated. Our thanks go out to Sue Hibbs for planning and coordinating this event.Pack 255 also participated in the national Scouting for Food drive this year. This is certainly a worthwhile activity, and hopefully we will continue to participate in this event annually. We thank Carla Nadzam, Sue Hibbs, and everyone else who assisted in planning and coordinating the event and all of those who participated. Helping others has always been a very important part of Scouting, and activities such as these are fun and rewarding for our Scouts. If anyone has any ideas for future service projects and would like to plan and coordinate the event, please let me know.
