Nice web site. But some of your info is wrong. I am the President of the Comox District Mountaineering Club, we built the trail up to Alone Mt.. It is very easy to find if you ask the right people. We also built the trails into Strathcona Park. As for the "Judges Route", again you must ask the right people for the right info. The trail was upgraded this past year(1999). If people want updated info,please E-mail me and I will do my best to inform you. One final note is that there will be a charge of $3.00 er person per day to overnight camp in the Strathcona Park area.(Kwai,Circlet Lakes,Della Falls, Elk River,Landslide lake) starting in June of 2000.

Great story, I know exactly what you mean about the "they measure, you measure" stuff as I hiked in France last summer and swear the hikes were twice as long as the stated distances. I'm coming to the island this summer and looking forward to doing some iking. Reading your story about the west trail, has me even more excited about the trip. I just did my second WCT exped - the last was 17 years ago. It was more rugged back then - fewer boardwalks and no food stands; but the incredible beauty remains. Last time (1981) I did the trail with 4 navy buddies. We spent 8 days, 7 nights on the tr il from south to north and were blessed with 6 days of dry weather. We wore terrible army packs and combat boots, and our provisions were tinned field rations making for packs upwards of 70 lbs to start. It was brutal, especially the first day from Gord n River to Thrasher Cove since we had intended to catch the ferry to Thrasher. It was a rough day and the ferry would only take us across the river so we had an unexpected workout on day one. This time (12 - 18 Aug 98) was perfect. It was a family trip we were 3 brothers + 2 nephews/sons who together had never done anything like this in 20 years. We did the trail north to south, spent 7 days, 6 nights, were fitter, stronger and far better equipped than my last WCT trek. To top if off, the weather was perfect -- the only rain was light showers during two sleeps, and one morning. It was a good bonding experience, and absolute joy for the outdoorsperson. I enjoyed your account - thanx for publishing. Happy trails. P.S. We met a pair of ladies on the trail -- actually they camped at the same spots as we did each night - one was about 55, the other about 62. The latter was the avid one who did several such hikes every year. My message here is - please don't stop n w - I'm sure you could do this again for another 10 years having shown your mettle this time at the tender age of 52 (did you say?)
