The life of Thomas Nesbit (1769-1861)
and
Constance Bennington (1767-1854)

Married in Kentucky

Thomas Byron Nesbit was born April 10, 1769 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It is said that his father (name unknown) was born near Edinburgh, Scotland. In the early 1770's he moved his family to Bourbon County, Kentucky, having traveled down the Ohio River by flatboat. Thomas' father and mother died in Kentucky. His father was killed by Indians. Thomas married Constance Bennington December 14, 1790. They had eight children, Susanna, Jane, William, Rachel, John, David, Thomas Jr., and Sarah, all born in Nicholas County, Kentucky. Thomas was active in the church at Concord and Carlisle.

The Move To Monroe County, Indiana

In the fall of 1825, Thomas and Constance, packed their belongings and moved westward. With them were daughter Jane and her husband John Mathers, son William and his wife Elizabeth Hall, son Thomas Jr. and daughter Sarah. After many days they reached Bloomington, Indiana. In the spring of 1826 Thomas purchased land on Richland Creek, in Richland Township. Their log home was used for church services until a church was built in 1838 on land donated by Thomas and Constance. From the History of the Congregation of Disciples at Richland in Monroe County Indiana from it's beginning until January 1, 1864", "Elder Thomas Nesbit was the founder of the Richland Church. Thomas and his family formed the nucleus of the congregation of Richland Church." Thomas and Constance are buried at the Richland Cemetery, next to the church. Thomas had been a farmer. His home had been a haven for travelers and a happy meeting place for friends.
Much of the above information was written by Dow B. Foster in 1809 for the Monroe County Historical Society. Thomas Nesbit was Dow's great grandfather.

We currently have about 400 names in this database and will make additions as new discoveries are made and time permits.
