The BMW 750hL, a production ready car demonstrated at Expo 2000, is the culmination of three decades of research on hydrogen powered vehicles.

The BMW 750hL is a car powered by sunlight and water. The BMW 750hL has a range of about 200 miles-or 100 miles from Oxnard and back. The BMW 750hL has a 12-cylinder combustion engine with two independent electronically controlled fuel induction systems That allow the vehicle to run on either gasoline or hydrogen
 

BMW also has a hybrid 12-cylinder combustion engine capable of running on either gasoline or hydrogen. The engine has two independent, electronically controlled fuel induction systems. The The BMW 750hL hydrogen engine has a 140-liter tank for the liquid hydrogen and provides a range of 400 kilometers


 BMW Planned to market a car in 2003 powered by an internal-combustion engine that burns hydrogen or gasoline. {See Is BMW Building a Hydrogen Bombshell? -From Businessweek} While the rest of the world's automakers experiment with hydrogen-powered fuel cells, BMW continues to insist hydrogen is better used in conventional internal-combustion engines. Recently BMW board member Burkhard Goeschel announced BMW will have a hydrogen-powered car available by 2008. : BMW says it will introduce an internal-combustion V12-powered 750hL luxury sedan that looks and drives just like any other comparable fossil fuel powered vehicle of its class.

 

BMW unveiled a hydrogen-powered Mini Cooper, featuring an internal combustion engine (ICE) similar to its Clean Energy cars. The Mini Cooper features an advanced hydrogen fuel storage tank that utilizes the same space as a conventional fuel storage tank.





“California is, so to speak, the laboratory of the future for carmakers throughout the world-and also our toughest test bed,” ..... “If I may use an expression from our engineers in Munich, ‘California is a tough nut.'” Goeschel said.

BMW also will break with tradition by using liquid-not gaseous-hydrogen, a state that only exists at temperatures of minus 424 degrees Fahrenheit. The liquid hydrogen is stored in the gas tank equivalent of a big Thermos riding in the trunk. Liquid hydrogen and oxygen are introduced through fuel injectors into a 750hL variant's cylinders the same way as gasoline and oxygen are in a conventional BMW. The end result, is that the hydrogen version produces almost no tailpipe emissions, but also much less horsepower

 

Along with with Shell , BMW has developed a technology for dispensing hydrogen from a filling station's pumps into a car's fuel tanks. The world's first fully automatic hydrogen filling station was opened in May 1999 at the Munich Airport. {See Hydrogen Infrastructure}
