Review:
Waterland
is film about a man who is haunted by his past and his present, and escapes both
by weaving stories and retreating into his mind, which appears he may be losing.
The film uses a flashback narrative, set in England's beautiful eastern wetlands
known as the Fens, a marshy area reclaimed from the sea. The cinematography of
the flat and slightly eerie flatlands is excellent. Jeremy Irons (Lolita,
Reversal of Fortune) limited narration is critical to the wonderful storytelling
laced throughout the movie. Ethan Hawke (Dead Poets Society)
only plays a small role, but it's an interesting role nonetheless. The films score
is powerful and I can't for the life of me find it for sale. Waterlands
is a quiet film which tells an intriguing story and tells it with great style.
An admittedly odd choice to land on ones top 100 list, but for various reasons
this film has left a lasting impact on me. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
