Novena in Honor of Saint Anthony
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, by
Rev. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, Ph.D., S.T.L., a novena is:
"A term to describe a continuous praying of a formula for personal devotion, either on nine
consecutive days or once a week for nine weeks. Most often these prayers are for a particular
intention and are in honor of a particular saint or aspect of Christ."
The following is a "basic" novena in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua:
1. Visit a shrine of Saint Anthony of Padua (Franciscan church, your parish church, or even your
own home).
2. At the shrine, pray to Saint Anthony with confidence for your intentions.
3. If possible, receive the Sacraments (Penance & Holy Eucharist).
4. Make a donation (within your means) of "Saint Anthony's bread" for the poor.
5. Continue this for nine consecutive Tuesdays.
