John William Gilchrist

John William Gilchrist was born June 28, 1867, in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama, and died July 22, 1920 in Flint, Smith County, Texas.

(Note: I received notification on 12 April 2006 that the Texas Department of State and Health Services, Department of Vital Statistics, was unable to locate a death certificate for John William Gilchrist, so the dates I was given for John William Gilchrist's birth and death are unverified at this time.)

He married Edna Eleanor Overton, daughter of John Henry and Alabama Eugenia Daniel Overton, November 14, 1889, in Clarke County, Alabama, daughter of John Henry Overton and Alabama Eugenia Daniel. Edna was born October 13, 1875, and died May 23, 1958, at Memorial Hospital, Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas. John William and Edna Overton Gilchrist are buried at Prairie Springs Cemetery, Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt County, Texas.

(Note: There is no tombstone for John William Gilchrist in Prairie Springs Cemetery.)

1. Seth Ambrose Gilchrist - born January 01, 1891, Alabama; died January 17, 1891, Alabama.

(Seth Ambrose is not listed on any documents I've been able to access, but we know from the 1900 census that Edna Gilchrist had given birth to 5 children, one of whom had died. Also, the individual who shared this information with me, lived with Seth Ambrose's brother for all of her young life and, therefore, has reason to have personal knowledge of this child.)

2. John Daniel Gilchrist - born August 28, 1892, Grove Hill (Suggsville), Clarke County, Alabama; died May 04,1976, Robertsdale, Baldwin County, Alabama; married Lena Pearl Gilchrist, daughter of James Damascus (or Daniel) and Epsie Ann Anderson Gilchrist, on December 19, 1917, in Mobile County, Alabama. Lena Pearl Gilchrist was born April 14, 1896, Clarke County, Alabama and died July 04, 1976, Silverhill, Baldwin County, Alabama. Both are buried at Old Whistler Cemetery, Mobile County, Alabama.

3. Claudie Gilchrist - born June 01, 1895, Alabama, married Rosia (Rosie) Hawkins Goodwin on December 31, 1910 in Alabama. He was born May 9, 1882 to Jonathan and Nolen Goodwin.
4. Edna Nancy Gilchrist - born July 30, 1896, Alabama. She married Melvin John Osborn on January 13, 1917, in Van Zandt County, Texas. Melvin John Osborn was born about 1883, and died about 1946. Edna Nancy Osborn died in 1999 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Both she and her husband are buried at Prairie Springs Cemetery, Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt County, Texas.
5. William Gordon Gilchrist - born December 26, 1899, Alabama; died December 26, 1972, Tyler, Smith County, Texas; married Vennie Lee Carroll, daughter of Don Thurston and Minnie May Stamps Carroll/Carrell, on January 13, 1921, Canton, Van Zandt County, Texas. She was born August 19, 1907, Van Zandt County, Texas, and died February 18, 1982, Tyler, Smith County, Texas. William Gordon Gilchrist and his wife are buried in Prairie Springs Cemetery, Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt County, Texas.
6. Katie Augusta Gilchrist - born about 1903, Alabama. She married Linnie/Lemmie Franklin Young on September 29, 1917. Linnie/Lemmie Franklin Young was born September 17, 1899, and died in 1952. (She may have been married first to Unknown Speer but this is not verified.) Katie Gilchrist Young died in 1984 in Van Zandt County, Texas. Both she and her husband, Linnie/Lemmie F. Young, are buried in Prairie Springs Cemetery, Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt County, Texas.

7. Julia Gilchrist - born August 13, 1905, Grovehill, Clarke County, Alabama; died November 17, 1989, Tyler, Smith County, Texas; married first Martin Jefferson (or Jasper) Carroll/Carrell, son of Don Thurston and Minnie May Stamps Carroll/Carrell, on January 12, 1921, Van Zandt County, Texas. He was born November 20, 1904 and died June 09, 1926. She married second Tommie L. Speer about 1927. He was born about 1891 in Louisiana. She married third __?__ Tittle, after 1930.
8. David Gilchrist - born about 1909, Alabama. (Could possibly have died young.)
9. Richard Vivian "Dick" Gilchrist - born May 01, 1911, Allen, Clarke County, Alabama; died July 01, 1977, Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas; married Margaret Helen Grimes. She was born September 10, 1929 and died October 06, 1996. He married second Veta May Wright. Richard Vivian "Dick" Gilchrist ia buried in Tom Havard Cemetery, Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas.
10. Lois Gilchrist - married __?__ Snow.
11. Gordie Miller Gilchrist - born about October 28, 1916, Alabama. She married Charley Wright. She died May 2, 2003.

He married first Epsie Ann Anderson on December 20, 1895 in Clarke County, Alabama. She was born June 18, 1878, in Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama and died November 18, 1914 in Whistler, Mobile County, Alabama. He married second Elizabeth Mae Payne. She was born April 29, 1889, and died November 10, 1961. James Damascus (or Daniel) Gilchrist and both his wives are buried at Elam Cemetery, Eight Mile, Mobile County, Alabama.
