Mrs. Sarah Spires of Gaston, Passes (1/4/1862 - 5/4/1939)

Mrs. Sarah Spires, 65, of Gaston, died Friday night at a Columbia Hospital, after an illness of several months.

The deceased was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church near Gaston. She was the widow of E. Spires, Gaston.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mary Baughman, of West Columbia; four sons, Jesse Spires of Gaston; George Spires of Lexington; Elvin Spires and Barto Spires of Ola; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Roland of Lexington; Mrs. Nolia Hutto of Gaston, and Mrs. Levie Hyman of Swansea; three brothers, Martin Sharpe of Livingston; Baston Spires of near Wagener, and David Spires of Lexington.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 o'clock Saturday morning from the Harmony Baptist Church near Gaston, the Rev. T. A. Snyder, pastor of the Brookland Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in the churchyard.

Pallbearers were six grandsons - Aaron Baughman, Tom Baughman, Lever Baughman, Carl Spires, Cromer Spires and Woodrow Spires.

Mrs. Leola S. Dowd, 85, wife of Belton J. Dowd, of 716 Dixiana Road, West Columbia, died Wednesday at Lexington County Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late Archie and Minnie Sharpe Spires. She was a member of the First Baptist Church at Gaston.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Bobby Dowd of Orlando, Fla.; six daughters, Miss Lillie Dowd of Dixiana; Mrs. Minnie Goodwin Carson of West Columbia; Mrs. Amy Debnam of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Mrs. Mary Anderson, Mrs. Phyllis Payne and Mrs. Freda Watts of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Fred Spires of Swansea; 31 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Steve Fowler and the Rev. William R. Paulling. Burial was in the First Baptist Church cemetery at Gaston.

Belton J. Dowd, 89, of 716 Dixiana Road, West Columbia, died August 2 at Lexington County Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Lexington County, he was a son of the late John and Lizzie Sturkie Dowd. He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are a son, Bobby Dowd of Orlando, Fla.; six daughters, Mrs. Mary Andrews, Mrs. Phyllis Payne and Mrs. Freda Watts of St. Louis, Mrs. Amy Debnam of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Minnie Goodwin Carson of West Columbia and Miss Lillie Dowd of Dixiana; three brothers, Gary, Henry and Harry Dowd of Gaston; a sister, Mrs. Reda Smith of West Columbia; 32 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

SWANSEA -- Harvey Wade Spires Sr., 68, of Swansea died Wednesday in Columbia Hospital.

He was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Arch and Martha Wise Spires. He was a retired county tax collector and a member of Westwide Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Thompson Funeral Home in West Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Willie Cromer. Burial will be in Melrose Memorial Gardens in Swansea.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lureen H. Spires; two daughter, Mrs. Samuel J. Sloan of Huntsville, Ala., and Mrs. Frank Holloday of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Clinton V. Spires of Columbia and H. W. Spires Jr. of Greenville; a sister, Mrs. Ocie Scarbough of Atlanta; and two brother, Fred Spires of Swansea and Frank Spires of Olar.

Pallbearers will be Hobson Rucker, Richard Lawson, Franklin Swygert, Paul Hutto, Charles Cochren and Windell Hawkins.

SWANSEA--Funeral services for Harvey Wade Spires Sr. were held today in Thompson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Willia Cromer. Burial was in Melrose Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Spires, 68, died Wednesday.

Mrs. Lureen Hutto Spires, 72, of Swansea, died Monday in Rikard Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Lucius D. and Arrie Pough Hutto. She was a member of Swansea Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Clinton V. Spires or Columbia and Harvey W. Spires Jr. of Greenville; two daughters, Mrs. S. Joe (louise) Sloan and Mrs. Frank (Gwendolyn) Holliday of Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. R. R. Jeffcoat and Mrs. Jack E. Taylor of Columbia; four brothers, Alexander E. and Lincoln A. Hutto of St. Matthews, W. Robert Hutto of Pensacola, Fla., and Lucius Hutto of Columbia, nine grandchildren and six great-greatchildren.

Mrs. Daisy Spires Scarbrough, 72, of Swansea, widow of Ocie S. Scarbrough, died Sunday in a Columbia hospital.

Born in Swansea, she was a daughter of the late Archie R. and Martha Wise Spires. She was a member of the Swansea Baptist Church. Surviving are a brother, Fred W. Spires of Swansea; a sister, Mrs. Leola Dowd of West Columbia, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Culler Funeral Home, with burial in Melrose Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Clinton Spires, Joe Sloan, H. W. Spires, Jr., Frank Spires, Jr., Otis Peele, Jr. and Willie Keisler.

Fred W. "Ted" Spires, 74, retired Swansea police chief, died Monday at Orangeburg Regional Hospital.

Born in Swansea, he was a son of the late Arch and Martha Wise Spires.

Mr. Spires was a former memeber of the Swansea Town Council, a former magistrate and former constable of the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Association.

Surviving is his widow Mrs. Alberta H. Spires

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia, conducted by the Rev. James P. Hawsey and the Rev. Nevell Lambert. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family suggests that those who wish may make memorials to a charity.

Born in Richland County, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Annie Francis Mills Herring. She was a member of Swansea Methodist Church.

Surviving are an aunt, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
