Someone Should Have
Told Him

I went to the birthday party,
But I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink at all,
So I had a sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would.
That I didn't choose to drink and drive,
Though some friends said I should.

I knew i'd made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right.
As the party finally ended,
And the kids drove out of sight.

I got into my own car,
Sure to get home in one piece.
Never knowing what was coming,
Something I expected least.

As I lie here on the pavement,
I can hear the policeman say.
The kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
        His voice seems far away.

My own blood is all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I hear the paramedics say,
This girl is going to die

And now the pain is cutting me,
Like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell my sister not to be afraid,
And tell my Daddy to be brave.

And when I go to heaven
Put "Daddy's girl" on my grave.
Someone should have tought him,
That its wrong to drink and drive.

Maybe if his parents had,
Then I would be alive.
I wish that you could hold me Mom.
As I lie here and die,
I wish that I could say,
I love you and goodbye.

This poem was written 5 years ago by a high school student in Jacksonville, Florida. It was sent to me by Pat S. Patterson. This message about drinking and driving needs to reach not only every teenager who is thinking about driving after they have been out partying, but also every adult that has just had a "few". Innocent people are dying every day, because someone chose to drink and drive. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, and yes.....even you! Nobody is immune to being a victim of a drunk driver. So the next time you drink, and intend to get behind that steering wheel, THINK about it, think about it real hard, and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!
