New Center Serves American Indians
By IRENE GARCIA
The only community outreach center dedicated to serving
American Indians in the Antelope, Santa Clarita and San Fernando
valleys has opened in Van Nuys.
The American Indian Community Outreach Center is only a small
office now, but its two-person staff provides information, counseling
and referral services to members of the American Indian community.
A similar center in Van Nuys lost its funding and closed in 1996.
The new facility is funded by Los Angeles County, said Patsy Dixon,
outreach coordinator for the American Indian Community Outreach
Center.
"It's been forever [since we've] had this type of service and
there's a tremendous need," Dixon said. "About 50 to 75 people use
the center now, and we're trying to get the word out that we're here."
Dixon said that eventually the facility will expand to offer a
medical clinic, women's substance abuse center and a women's
shelter.
"There really aren't any shelters or substance abuse groups that
cater to Native American women," Dixon said.
The American Indian Community Outreach Center at 7555 Van
Nuys Blvd. can be reached by calling (818) 901-3501.
