FORT BELKNAP, Mont. (AP) - George "Sonny" Took The Shield, an
Assiniboine Indian leader instrumental in repatriation of his
ancestors' remains held by the Smithsonian Institution, died
Wednesday of cancer. He was 53.

Took The Shield, whose Assiniboine name was WA-ha-Chunga-
Ay-Ya-Goo, had been the Fort Belknap tourism director and was
an illustrator. He was a spiritual leader for the Assiniboine Indians.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the tribal Law and
Order Commission on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.
