Area Indian tribes discuss economic development
January 27, 2000, 5:45 PM

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) -- Separating business decision-
making and politics was the focus of a recent meeting between
economic development administrators from Michigan and
Wisconsin American Indian tribes.

Finding common ground among tribes across the nation is crucial
to making economic development, leaders said at the Wednesday
meeting.

Leaders said they hope to identify some significant barriers that
keep tribes from expanding.  They also talked about initiating a
business commission that would deal with some of the employee
issues tribal councils now deal with.

"In tribal councils you won't have an employee call a CEO if they
have a problem," said Marta Diaz of the Sault Tribe.

Just improving communication among tribes across the Midwest
would be a big step toward developing and promoting tribal
businesses, leaders said.

Mike Lumsden, of the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, suggested
that tribes should be working together on business ventures instead
of  competing with one another, the Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant
reported Thursday.

"We should work with business communities to find out why bankers
and institutions are leery of doing business with a tribe," Lumsden
said.
