Aboriginal Women Advocate Taking Traditional Roles
EDMONTON (CP) _ A national native women's advocate told an
Aboriginal child development conference Thursday it is up to
native mothers and grandmothers to take back their roles as
traditional teachers of their children and grandchildren.
"It is the responsibility of our generation to bridge that link
between elders and our babies to be sure they receive native
education," said Marilyn Buffalo, president of the Native Women's
Association of Canada.
"We have the traditional knowledge and, as we know both our
traditional languages and English in the present modern-day
educational system, it's up to us to bridge those two so that the
child will receive the benefits of both worlds.
"When we were educated, those kinds of values were beaten out
of us, so it's important that we see to it that our children receive
what we can teach them and also to receive a good education."
Buffalo was the keynote speaker at the Alberta Aboriginal Head
Start Conference 2000, part of a national pre-school program for
Aboriginal children.
