Ranchers Say Buffalo Is Better

Many came to this year's stock show in search of buffalo,
instead of cattle. This is Barry Bishop's second year
buying buffalo. Like many other ranchers, he does it
because cattle prices have gone way down.

"The future looks promising," says Bishop. "And we were
looking for something different than cattle. At the same
time, cattle was down and it just looks like a good
opportunity."

Barry's not the only one to take advantage of the
opportunity. Ranchers all over KOTA Territory have made
the switch from cattle to buffalo, and they're convinced
it was the right decision.

"Any of us in the business are not sorry we made the
switch, we're having tremendous success with this
animal," said Greg Smink of The Dakota Territory
Buffalo Association.

Ranchers like Gary choose buffalo instead of cattle for
various reasons. They're easier to maintain. They're
also easier to feed, and they don't require as much care
in the winter.

"They pretty much take care of themselves," says Smink.
 

Besides requiring less maintenance, ranchers say dealing
with buffalo is more economical. Prices for cattle are
working their way back up this year, but many buffalo
lovers probably won't make the switch back.
