A controversial Indian head logo unveiled by UND in November was removed
Wednesday from the Ralph Engelstad Hockey Arena Web site.
"We just chose to take it off," said Bill Schoen of Schoen Associates,
the
architectural firm in charge of the arena. Schoen Associates owns the
ralphengelstadarena.com Web site, which until today used the new logo.
Created by Native American artist Ben Brien and commissioned by UND,
the
new logo was used as a graphic at the top of the Web site. Several
smaller
logos were used as icons to link to other pages.
Wednesday, the site was reduced to a picture of the arena, which is
under
construction along Sixth Avenue North.
David Vorland, executive assistant to UND President Charles Kupchella,
said Kupchella did not give Schoen Associates clearance to use the
logo.
UND Media Relations Coordinator Peter Johnson said Kupchella didn't
know
about the Web site until he was asked about it by a television reporter
on
Tuesday. Kupchella was out of town Wednesday.
The unveiling of the new logo in November reignited a controversy about
UND's Fighting Sioux nickname.
Last week, Kupchella said the logo would not be used by UND while a
commission studying the school's nickname was at work. Kupchella is
expected to appoint members to that commission in the next two weeks.
He
said it
would have a flexible timeline.
