-- Johnson Honored By Indian-Ed Group  --

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium held an honoring
ceremony in Washington DC Tuesday for Senator Tim Johnson. The group
honored Johnson for his efforts to get an additional $4,000,000 of federal
money for tribal colleges and to help Native American students.
The president of Oglala Lakota College, Tom Short Bull, says without
Johnson's effort, "tribal colleges would probably receieve no more than an
additional $800,000 each year." Monday president Clinton proposed another
$3,000,000 increase for tribal colleges, though republicans say the
president's budget will face drastic changes before it becomes law.
