In a letter dated January 27, 2000 Mr. Ramon Riley, director
Cultural resources of the White Mountain Apache Nation,
has asked the Royal Museums of Art & History in Brussels,
Belgium to remove the Mountain Spirit masks that are on
display within the "Indian Summer" exposition.

In his letter, Mr. Riley explains to the museum's conservator
that the White Mountain Apache are recognized by the U.S.A.
as a Native Sovereign Nation; and that it is his job to represent
the tribe's interest in the protection and appropriate use of
cultural and historical information and objects.

Beside the removal of the sacred masks currently on display
in Brussels; Mr. Riley request these masks be returned to their
resting places within the Apache Homeland.

Added to the official letter, were several petitions from White
Mountain Apache people supporting and amplifying this
request.
