WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ --
For the 16th year, The
United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), in cooperation with the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will award grants
to finance locally based HIV prevention projects.
For 2000, USCM is awarding $915,000 to grantees in three
areas: (1) women at high risk, (2) gay and bisexual men of color,
and (3) NATIVE AMERICANS. Community-based organizations, local
health departments, and Native American tribes/nations will
be eligible to apply. The application deadline is April 17, 2000.
In announcing the grants, USCM executive director J. Thomas
Cochran noted that this year's total award is the second highest
amount in the program's 16 year history saying, "The nation's
Mayors remain more committed than ever to preventing HIV and AIDS.
We remain steadfast in strengthening local capacity for HIV/AIDS
prevention activities until a cure is found."
Since 1985, the Conference and CDC have awarded over $10.2
million
to 212 locally based HIV prevention projects throughout the country.
Grant recipients are generally community-based organizations, local
health departments, and Native American nations. USCM grants are
one-time awards, though many programs that begin with funding from
the Conference go on to become key components of the public health
system fighting the spread of AIDS in their communities.
Grant recipients will be announced in the summer. Parties
interested in getting further information about these grants should
call USCM at 202-293-7330 and ask for Lillie Brown.
The United States Conference of Mayors is the official
nonpartisan
organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are
about 1,100 such cities in the country today. Each city is
represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the
Mayor.
