Subject: FALSE ALARM !  Re: ALERT!!!! "Native American Tools" web site

Hianua Was'te Elsie...(good morning),

I've carefully checked out this site that claims to be offering
authentic artifacts. They definitely are authentic, however, they are not
authentic in the aspect that people are lead to believe. These items that
are for sale on this web site are what is called " Authentically
Reproduced Artifacts". There are no genuine "sacred" items on this web
site, no genuine eagle feathers. If you click on the images to enlarge
them you can see that these feathers are artificially died and they are
not genuine. Sometimes turkey feathers can closely resemble owl feathers
also, which seems to be the case here too. The pipes are not catlinite
(pipestone) nor can they be considered as "sacred" in the terms that we
recognize.
Although some people may be offended by the sale of Wolf skins, etc.
(which I am one of those people offended by this) this site is really not
doing anything wrong other than misleading their customers and
misrepresenting their products in a particular manor. The objects that
are being sold on this web site, is supporting legitimate American &
Canadian Indian artisans.
I am also the owner of an American Indian trading post which sells
authentically reproduced artifacts, jewelry and other authentic artwork
that is hand-crafted by the Dine' (Navajo), Hopi, Zuni etc... and their
works come with a certificate of authenticity too. In todays market it
can be very hard for some people to seperate genuine native made products
from fraudulant look-a-likes. So now, many native artists include a
certificate of authenticity which includes their name, tribal
affiliation, and enrollment #.
I know what it's like to be falsely accused of selling sacred objects &
artifacts. This alert that has been posted to try and close this guy's
shop has been sent out in a wrongful way and it should be stopped.

I do not know the owner of that web site/store nor do I support the
manor or surroundings in which he sells and represents his merchandise
but I do strongly support the sale of art & craftwork of my native
brothers and sisters along with their rights to do so in a respectful and
honorable way.
I have to admit that after the hell that the English has caused to our
people, they should not have any right to profit from us now or ever, at
least not without paying additional export taxes to our tribal
governments along with some of the back taxes that they owe us for the
use of our lands since as far back as the 1400's. But since it is puting
food on the tables of our people I guess we could cut this wasicu a
little slack this time ...lol...lol

Hau Kola,

I have written to the administrator of this shop in a nice way to explain
what we see happening here.  Having photographed in the American section of
the archives of the University of Pennsylvania Museum for some time, I told
them the objects they have on display as "authentic Medicine Tools" of the
Native North American are nothing like anything I ever saw in the archives.
They have no true tribal affiliation and no true design that matches any I
know of.  Also, as one who does traditional ceremonies today, their objects
are nothing like any I have seen being used today.  They more closely
resemble what I have seen being made to sell to tourists, mostly by
non-Native Americans.

I also told them that many of the Native North American Indians seeing their
web site feel they are misrepresenting the People with their claims that
these objects are "authentic Medicine Tools" and would like them to stop
doing so.

I am sure many people are also writing to them, so we shall see what, if
anything is their response.

We are one spirit

Hau Elsie :)

about this site... as it is in england im checking it out personally
ok...... I have gone through the site and lol Medicine Tools...powerful :(
wannabe site for wannabe medicine men
about as much POWER as a dead light bulb........ anyways
one thing I would pick up on... on every item I looked at NO "Real" eagle
feathers are there.... they are either goose feathers,  hawk  or man made
feathers.... for one Eagle Feathers would not be allowed into this country
on any items or allowed out of the US unless a certificate is obtained by
the dept of argriculture in UK  and similar in the US....unless you can prove
you are a ""card carrying first nations people"
I know :) as I travel back and forth and have to carry a card and get
permission in writing to carry my eagle feathers, and also  the drum group
over last year had to do the same to bring their's into the UK.....it is VERY
STRICT where eagle feathers are concerned.. so  that Question no none of
these "tourist souvenirs"" carry Eagle Feathers....the fact that he sells
them as ""powerful medicine tools" I can deal with....and will::::::::::ok..
and I can say the only people you will get buying this crap are hobbyist
wannabe's who you know as well as I,  ""dress up every weekend  and PLAY
Indian""""  and NOTHING
except a LOBOTOMY  will stop these fools from doing this:(
I have been to soooo many of these weekend ""pooo wows"""
thats NOT a typo :)
that  instead of fighting them and wasting my energy I have come to the
conclusion that everyone that visits them comes away with the same
opinion...."""sad..misguided...need a life people"    they just make complete
fools of themselves and are not worth bothering about..
but an e mail campaign to this place<<did I miss something or was the  owners
name NOT anywhere on this site?? >>> telling him that these are NOT authentic
medicine tools will let him know that native people are aware of what he is
doing,,, but unfortunately    I doubt it will make any difference...Im gonna
visit   anyway and frighten the S....  outta him <<<<<hehehehe>>  bet he's
never met a ""real Ndn"" face to face eh......
take care sis...... Jacqui

Hau Mitakuyepi,
I sent him the "Lakota Declaration of War". I am wondering if there are other
Indian Nations who have a similar proclamation/declaration. Otherwise, I
would flood him with e-mails, on-line petitions, phone calls, faxes, call a
boycott! Most of all pray for these persons to see through the ignorance.

Elsie,
I read the item titled:  ALERT!!!! "Native American Tools" website.
I decided to take a different approach with this guy. I have e-mailed a
question to him about what he is selling. I will let you know what he
responds. We may find out more about he is is obtaining these items if
others were willing to do the same.

Hi Elsie,
I went to this site, and see that this man is selling pipes too!  I am afraid
I need a bit of educating here.  What does anyone suggest to get this guy to
stop?

If you think different people on the list would like to help me to learn some
things, go ahead and post this.  I won't learn anything any other way, I
guess.

I see a lot of people selling items like shown in the tattoo shop.  I
strongly object to anyone who is not a Native American SELLING anything that
has to do with Native
American culture if they are not of Native blood.  However, I see it
happening all over.  I see non natives on drum or in booths.  How do you go
about stopping this kind of junk?

I am not Native American.  I really don't believe these people have any right
to do this.  Most people have no idea of how bad it is to buy these things
when they have no idea of what they really are, much less how to use them!

I would be VERY happy to know and help with stopping this kind of attitude
and its actions.  Is there a way to find out who is selling things to him and
why?

Jackie
