U. OF I. BEGINS NEW DIALOGUE ON MASCOT

February 18, 2000
University of Illinois officials announced this week they will open up a
public debate over the future of Chief Illiniwek, the controversial
university mascot.

The university's board of trustees plans to hire a lawyer, possibly a
retired jurist, to gather opinions on the symbol, which has come under
attack in recent years from Native Americans and other groups contending it
is an outdated, racist caricature that should be eliminated.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and the public can express their opinions
on the symbol through e-mails and letters and at a special session on the
Urbana campus April 14.

The legal professional will submit a transcript of the April session, along
with other correspondence received, to the board of trustees. The trustees
will then hold a response session in the fall, at which time they may adopt
resolutions or issue general statements on the mascot.

Following a highly publicized debate about the symbol in 1990, the board
adopted a resolution retaining the symbol. But university officials said new
concerns raised about the mascot warranted another open debate.

Correspondence may be sent to Dialogue on Chief Illiniwek, P.O. Box 5052,
Champaign, IL 61825, or to Dialogue@uillinois.edu. The deadline for
submissions is May 31.
