Presidential hopefuls invited to Indian forum
Tribal forum draws presidential hopefuls

By Dan Mayfield
Tribune reporter

The dates of the American Indian Tribal Leaders Summit in Albuquerque
have been changed, and presidential candidates Pat Buchanan and Alan Keyes
have confirmed that they plan to attend the forum.
Discussions are still under way with the campaign organizations of Vice
President Al Gore, Democrat challenger Bill Bradley and GOP frontrunner and
Texas Governor George W. Bush, said Fidel Moreno, president of the American
Indian Chamber of Commerce of New Mexico.
The forum, originally scheduled for Feb. 24 and 25, is now scheduled
for April 6 and 7.
Leaders from tribal governments and American Indian organizations and
programs have been invited to attend the forum to discuss issues of concern
to American Indians. The American Indian Chamber of Commerce of New Mexico
is hosting the two-day forum at the Wyndham Hotel in Albuquerque.
The dates were moved because many of the candidates felt the February
dates didn't give them sufficient notice, said Moreno, adding that the dates
were also moved because of scheduling conflicts with the National Congress
of American Indians Mid-Year Conference in Washington, D.C.
"Many tribal leaders asked us to reconsider our dates so they don't
have to split going to the conferences," Moreno said.
Moreno said the chamber has received phone calls from Buchanan and
Keyes campaigns confirming they will attend the invite-only forum. The
chamber is "on hold," Moreno said, with the Gore, Bradley and Bush
campaigns.
"They're asking us about the focus, format and issues," Moreno said.
The chamber has received confirmation letters from 62 tribes that are
sending tribal leaders to the forum.
"Tribes are coming in full force with their councils and program
directors," Moreno said.
