Bones Believed Taken From Fremont Burial Mound
AP 02/21/2000

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) _ Vandals unearthed remains from an ancient Fremont
Indian burial mound and Iron County sheriff's deputies believe some bones
were taken.

Sheriff Dude Benson said he was alerted of the disturbance by a state
archaeologist who was involved in a dig at the site near Summit during the
early 1970s.

Sheriff's Detective Mark Gower said the mound was on private property and
the grave robbers could be charged with trespassing.

The 10-foot-high mound contains pottery and tools in addition to the human
remains, and Benson said there holes where people had looked for artifacts.

"This is someone's family," Benson said of the scattered bones. "It's a
sacred site."

Benson said there are hundreds of archaeological sites in the county. "They
are treasures, and should not be disturbed," he said.
