Subject: Re: Tribute to Anna Mae

Hello Kola ---- I thank you for this tribute.  For whatever
reason, I have felt Anna Mae's presence at various times;
mostly, when doing research for the Mic Mac's of Nova Scotia
with regard to the Indian Child Welfare Act.  Some years
back, I was researching for an upcoming appellate hearing
for a child removed from the jurisdiction of the tribe
and given to a non-Indian family.  The State's argument was
that once the mother crossed from the border of Nova Scotia
into the United States, the mother and her child forfeited
their status as Indians and could not utilize the ICWA.
While in the law library, I would feel a force directing me
down this aisle or that aisle.  Following that feeling, I
was led to important cases, a pertinent treaty between the
U.S. and the Mic Macs, and a National Geographic devoted to
the non-existence of borders between the two countries.
The case appeared to be air-tight but went before a judge
who headed an organization bearing the name "U.S. Cavalry."
That judge should have been recused (dismissed from the
case).  Unfortunately, we didn't find that out until he
ruled in favor of the non-Indian family and THEIR right to
adopt the child.
It is my belief that it was Anna Mae still watching over
the little one.  Her commitment to our Indian people was
and continues to be that strong.
To Anna Mae, we owe much.
