Qutoes from Kelly on the World Cup: |
On the game (with Russia): "It was a tough game, we did not want to underestimate Russia. I think we had opportunities in the game and we did not take them, they had a few lucky chances and they went in for them, so that's the way the game went." On the possibility of the team being a little too emotional: "Um no, not at all. The girls kept their heads before the game. During the game, we let the play go in the second half, and it cost us in the end, but that wasn't a factor in the game at all." On the next game against China: "Obviously, it is a very important game for us. We need to win. We are going to take the game seriuosly. Just because it is China, doesn't mean that it is any different then any other game. Obviously it puts pressure on us, but it's just another game." On how this game hurts them to finish second in their group: "It hurts, obviously, in terms of mentally and points on the table, but we could bounce back." On being at a disadvantage coming from their region and the long flight: "It is hard for us to get on the other side of the world; it is such a far travel, but I do not think it affects us. No, not at all. It takes around 24 hours." On the next couple of months with the WUSA folding: "I do not know what I am going to do after this, just because I'm trying not to focus on this (the world cup), but I have a few options and I will deal with that later, after this stage." On if she expected the WUSA to fold: "Obviously throughout the season, we knew it was a possibility, but everyone stayed positive up until the end and even up until last week." On playing with Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm during the WUSA season and what kind of advantage it gives Team USA: "The fact that they work of of each other, they compliment each other very well. Abby's the industrious forward bringing the ball down and Mia does all of the creating and working off of Abby's work. They compliment each other very well." On Australia's draw into Group D: It is good to be grouped with the three teams, China, Ghana and Russia. China is certainly strong team who is hard to BEAT, though, we have enough confidence to go further this time. We have a young but courageous team. We have met both Ghana and Russia before, and we have an advantage as we have beaten them. We beat Russian 2-0 in Nike Cup hosted this year in US. On Skippy the mascot and bringing a bit of Oz to the World Cup: “There’s a lot of shops in Australia that sell kangaroos, obviously, but that’s not our only one. We have two kangaroos that sit on the bench with us. They’re our mascots, especially since we couldn’t bring along a real mascot.” “We put Australian flags on our doors in the hotel, put up signs and just let people we’re there,” On the loss to Russia, a week later: "(I'm) still cut up about that game. We should have and could have won against Russia and that is what makes it hard to take.” Before the match with Ghana: “It’s an important match for us. We have to come away with the win and we are confident we can beat them. Ghana won’t be an easy opponent, so it should be an interesting match.” “We’re not overconfident at all. We’ve watched video of their games and seen some weaknesses, but we have weaknesses, too. It’s not going to be a walk in the park. We will have to be at our best if we are going to win this game.” After the loss to Ghana: "The first half of the game, we just lost. We didn't show up. We won the second half and we started moving the ball around, but we lost the game in the first half." |
