When most people talk about baseball's glory days, they refer to the 1950s (or earlier). But as someone in his early thirties, I hold up the 1970s as a wonderful era in the sport. Yes, that's when I started following the game, so it's naturally going to be a special time for me. But an objective analysis reveals just how exciting and influential a decade it was. The Seventies featured two of the greatest teams in history, the Oakland Athletics three-peat champions and the Big Red Machine, and the return of the New York Yankee dynasty. Two Hall of Famers — Johnny Bench, perhaps the greatest catcher of all time, and Rod Carew, one of baseball's best-ever hitters — were in their prime. And we saw the advent of free agency, which changed the sport forever, and what most consider the finest World Series ever played. My biggest sports tape trading objective is to find more games, especially regular-season contests, from this great decade. If you have any baseball games from the 1970s that are not in my library, please contact me. I'd love to try and work out a deal and perhaps share some fond diamond memories. |
